Having been a licensed insurance agent specializing in health insurance in both states, I can tell you that both are terrible when it comes to health insurance availability and affiordability but Massachusetts is MORE terrible. Also Massachusetts is much more of a Police State mentality. Their "health care reform" is what Obamacare was modeled on and health insurance in Massachusetts is a lot more expensive for less coverage than what was available before the so called "reform". Additionally, Massachusetts has much tougher laws about mandating vaccines which usually do more harm than good. I would rather live in RI and work in MA if given a choice.

Default Mass Health Insurance is A Blessing for Many of Us

Massachusetts health reform has made insurance available to everyone, including those with the preexisting conditions that limit availability in RI and elsewhere.

And unlike the case in other states, when you have a claim in MA the insurer pays it. I moved from Connecticut where my insurer was rejecting 50% of each claim though the contract said they should pay 80%. In 16 years I have NEVER had a claim rejected in Massachusetts, though several family members have chronic conditions that make them uninsurable in other states.

Only people who haven't had to USE health insurance think the MA plans are bad. Pre-existing conditions can include a lot of things you might not think would preclude getting insurance, but they do.
