I don't know zip codes too well (except where I grew up - 02914, 02915, and 02916). However, I will tell you to stay away from South Providence/parts of Cranston, Central Falls, and some parts of Pawtucket. Those areas tend to be the worst in terms of crime and poverty. I would also stay away from parts of Woonsocket as that area seems to have gone downhill.
Some of the best zip codes (and most expensive) include those in Barrington, Bristol, Narragansett, North Kingstown, Charlestown, Richmond, and Foster.
Cranston gets such a bad wrap on this board haha. Yes, there are some relatively "bad areas" (mostly just south of Prov.) - but having come from the Tampa Bay area, I'll be the first to tell you that a Rhode Islander's idea of "bad" is usually far less than that of a typical American.
RI was voted the 13th safest State by Morgan Quitno, an independent and well-respected democraphic firm. Cranston was named the 24th safest city (populations of over 70,000) in the US by the same group. Money Magazine also named Cranston one of the Top 100 Best Places to live in the country. RI Monthly named Cranston one of its' Faves just last month.
There are a lot of beautiful areas in Cranston, and its proximity to Providence is a big plus. Don't let people fool you.
I would feel the same way about some of California's bad areas. Rhode Island is funny because the really bad neighborhoods pale in comparison to lets say; Compton, East L.A., East Palo Alto, most of Oakland, East Side San Jose (where I grew up), Stockton-Lodi, Visalia, many parts of Long Beach, Watts, etc. I could go further by mentioning Pittsburgh, CA, Martinez, many parts of Vallejo, Richmond, Emeryville, and more. I am relatively new to RI but fail to see what some people complain about. RI is beautiful for the most part. I am here to stay.
02895-Woonsocket. Bad areas to stay away from is the Fairmount section.
Wood Avenue area. Right in downtown. I live in the Bernon section. near 146 (major highway) and stores. Good Elementry schools. Not so good middle school. Send kids to private school.
02816-Coventry. I grew up in this area, had to move only because my husband works in Mass. Generally good all over. Great schools. Has been built up more over the years.
02817-West Greenwich, very country area. All areas pretty safe.
02886-02889-Warwick-City has some nice areas away from the City action. Major Airport located here. Nice neighborhoods, some very old, overall middle of state.
02895-West Warwick--Avoid..Taxes are high, not great schools, I am sure there are nice neighborhoods, but wouldn't liver there.
02808-Bradford-nice area, nice neighborhoods, it is like a small area off the bigger city Westerly and Charlestown, A lot of tourist in the Summer, prices of gas are higher and such in the summer. More traffic.
All I can say is that try and visit the areas that you are looking to move to before doing so. Most RI'ers are nice, but and I am not sure where you are coming from, they are not the most welcoming bunch, and I lived here all my life!!
Anything in South County (south of Providence)tends to get more rain and ice than snow in the winter. 10 degrees cooler in the summer than the northern part. Northern RI tends to get a lot more snow in the winter, Hotter in the summer.
I do agree with WXJAY to stay away from the areas he mentioned, but cranston is of them.
When you do settle down here, you need to try our "coffee milk" and Del's Lemonade.
Good Luck to you.
Come on guys, I said parts of Cranston, not the entire city of Cranston! I have family in Cranston, so I am well aware that there are great parts of that city. But, some parts are not as desirable.
Thanks to everyone for their input. I am originally from up-state NY but moved to Raleigh, NC 13 years ago. I have visited RI many times, most recently the beginning part of July. I have had my fill of southern living. Need to get back north where I belong.
