Yeah, there are MANY casinos up there BUT weighing the pros and cons, in my personal situation (not even including my husband), I would rather live this far from family and drama. My husband actually works for a restaurant in the casino, and it happens to be a franchised one, so he moves from one to another based on which ones are owned by the same owner that he started with. My husband has never lived outside of RI/MA (Woonsocket, Harrisville, Mapleville, etc.).
As for the speed limits...no tickets BUT I definitely find myself trying desperately to drive slower around here because the places I would expect to be higher limits are so slow! It is funny that you mentioned WNY being you are in the Elmira/Watkins Glen/Penn Yan areas. We consider Penn Yan to be the Southern Tier usually...more from the people that live in the Buffalo/Rochester/and in between areas (which is me LOL).
Again, hilarious that you mention moving away from family and drama...it's one of the big reasons we wanted to leave in the first place. All of both our families are in RI and southeast MA (mine are all over, but I grew up in North Kingstown and Coventry...my husband's are mostly in MA...Attleboro, New Bedford and the Cape). So much family drama just really pushed us away. Our bestest friends up here are more like family to us than our own family (my dad hasn't spoken to us in two years...had a blow out with him and his wife two days before our youngest son was born...he's never even acknowledged the baby).
When we moved here...we weren't really sure what to call the region...lol. Upstate NY didn't feel right...to me, that's Rochester and Buffalo...and even more of Syracuse and the really northern regions of the state. Central NY doesn't really feel right either...maybe Albany might fall into that category.
We think of Elmira as more "Southern Tier" than where we are now. I mean...Penn Yan is pretty far north to be considered "southern." LOL So that left us with Western NY...and even though there's still quite a bit of western NY to the west of us...it just seemed like the best way to describe it to those we left in RI. We've also referred to our new region as "the Finger Lakes region of NY" but most of the folks we know in RI have NO idea what that means.
There was actually a huge convoluted thread on the NY forum discussing the names of the different regions...lol. Everybody's got a different opinion of what it should be. But when we tell people from RI that we're in western NY...they seem to grasp that better than anything else. So far anyways...lol
Oh...I have family that work in the casinos. My stepmother's brother works at Foxwoods as a pit boss (I think....last I heard anyways). I've had other extended family that work in some of the restaurants as well.
Yeah- wow- the place is a total hell hole and absolutely unlivable. I simply can't understand why everyone in the entire state hasn't moved to North Carolina by now.
I'm moving to Tennessee in a month or so. I like it here in Pawtucket, but there are no jobs. My fiance' and I are heading to Tennessee, and I am confident that I will find work there fairly quickly.

Really ? ? ? Hope you are going near a large city in TN. I have friends from RI over near Jackson TN who have been there going on years now. Both with high qualifications. She had to get an eBay business going to earn anything, and her husband didn't get a job for 2 years! Now he is finally working 30 miles away as a retail store clerk. Do your homework. Cost of living is low, but so are earnings.

I would suggest to anybody thinking of moving, find a job first...THEN move. Be open to where you're willing to go.
The key to a successful move is preparation...Make sure you know how you are going to earn your income. A friend of mine and his family will be gone by the end of the summer, but he has a job waiting for him.
He sent a resumé and them communicated by e-mail before visiting and getting a solid offer which he excepted.
Oh...he's moving to Savannah Georgia.

You got lucky, what can I say. But absolutely, have a job first no matter where you relocate to.
Wasn't so much about luck, but as rosco said...preparation. We've been researching a move out of RI for at least three years. Last year, my husband was offered a job in Rochester that is the same kind of work he was doing in RI and is doing for his new company here in Elmira.
We turned down that job offer because it was $4/hr less than he was making at the time AND, the family health plan was something like $800/month or some other outlandish figure.
We researched further and began to look at national and global companies that engage in the type of work my husband does (nothing special...he's a delivery driver of hazardous medical and industrial grade gasses...although it's certainly not a specialized field, there are few truck drivers that have the length of experience he has and it's one of those fields in which experience is highly valued). Anyways...we found a few national and global companies and began to watch their job openings, keeping an eye out for jobs in locales where we might like to permanently relocate. We were open to moving just about anywhere except the deep south and tornado alley.
Tennessee is a nice place to live...we did briefly consider openings there...but that whole "tornado alley" bit kind of scared us away...lol.
Anyways...the bottom line is that persistance pays off...but really, research and flexibility are key. It would be completely foolish to just blindly move and hope that you *might* be able to score a job in your field in your new location.
