I'm travelling alone with my six year old son in July, from Europe to Newark. We will then drive up to Boston, but we want to find a nice place to stay for a couple of days on our way. (We will probably be exhausted after the long flight.) I have never been in Rhode Island, so this should be a good opportunity to visit. I hope some of you can help us out in finding a good beach hotel to stay at. Do you have any good suggestions? Are there plenty of good beaches or nice beach towns? Or one in particular that is safe for the two of us?

You might try the Hotel Viking in Newport. Newport is a great town to visit and walk in and there are public beaches nearby. Loads of things to see and do. Take the mansion tour.

The Pleasant View Inn right at Misquamicut State Beach comes to mind. I think that with taxes and maybe a surcharge for the child, it might cost nearly $200 a night. Ugh. You would definately have to reserve well in advance for any beach front rooms along the R.I. coast, in the summer.
Misquamicut is a great beach and I find the surf there to be child friendly! There is a small arcade with just a few rides and some games which appeal to kids. There are restaurants along the beach road and plenty more for any taste and pocket book in Westerly and Narragansett.

I agree with Hollytree that Newport is a great place to visit. One mansion tour would be enough for a six year old. But, please, don't take the child to the cliff walk -- its dangerous!

Thank you, both of you! I looked into the Viking Hotel at Newport, but that was fully booked. As so many others. I'll check the Pleasant View Inn at Misquamicut, but they did not have any reservation online, so that requires some more effort. I never do anything well in advance, so I guess this will be difficult. But I've found something in Greenwich, CT, so maybe that's easier to do. Shorter drive as well, and I guess my six-year-old will appreciate that.
