Of course. When I first moved to NC I waitressed (fallback job). I'm from upstate NY (Hudson Valley) I didn't even know I had an accent! Whenever I said coffee, talk, etc. while waiting on people, I would get smerks & laughing. Now I work for an Orthopedic and I say "how can I direct your call, and right away they yell "I want to talk to so & so", because they don't think I'm helping them because they know I'm from the north. I was at a bar one time and this 19 year old boy starts talking about the civil war, I said "I'm sorry I wasn't there". Another time I was working at a restaurant, this girl says and points to 3 of us, "your from NY, your from NY & your from NY, are you guys taking over again"(civil war stuff again) - what the...? Actually when I was waitressing at a different restaurant, this guy says to me (Sox fan), "I know that accent, where are u from" I said "NY", he said "I'm sorry for that" - I thought to myself I'm not and I never even mentioned loving the Yankees (I've gotten that from Sox's fans & I dont even have anything against the Sox?). You see, I'm the kind of person who has nothing against anyone, their opinions, color, is everyone's god given right - go america - I'm just 9hrs away from NY and I fell like I'm in another country?? If you need to know more, I'll be glad to tell you. They also have bumper stickers down here, If you love NY so much, there's 95 north... come on!!

Well I'm in MA and I love New Yorkers. One of my best friends is from NYC. I don't get the negative stereotypes. Whenever I'm on vacation, say in Florida where alot of us North Easterners go, it seems like people from NY are more likely to hold open doors, give up their seat to a mom w/ kids, or strike up a conversation than others.
