Hi! I am new to this forum but I have been reading alot of your threads regarding the providence area. I am from Massachusetts and my husband works in Smithfield currently. The cost of gas is really sinking us so we have started looking at houses. We found a really nice house located near Ascham Field but I am worried about the area as I have 3 small girls. Can anyone tell me how the schools are in this area? Is it high in crime? We were also looking at Fairlawn houses in Pawtucket. Any insight would be awesome as I have lived in Massachusetts most of my life and everyone just tells me all of Providence is bad here, I assume it has its bad and good areas like Boston!
I didn't live in the area, nor do I know anyone who did/does, but it's pretty congested and there's the railroad just a block or two away. I think I visited in there once or twice and I didn't get any feeling of being unsafe. I realize you are probably looking to stay in/near 146 but if your husband works in Smithfield, why look in Providence? You didn't say whether you work, or where, so that's a factor that needs to be considered.
Personally, I'd look to N. Prov, or further north.
I don't work, I'm a SAHM. We were originally planning to move to fairlawn or darlington as we have close friends in Pawtucket but we like the house we found in that area better. I am just concerned it isn't a safe area as I heard many in Providence are not. The house we found is very nice with a large lot but I want to be sure it is an area I want to raise 3 small children.
Every neighborhood is different. Where you would want to raise 3 small children might not be what I would accept. If your friends in Pawtucket are good enough friends, maybe they'd be willing to drive into the neighborhood at various times of the week: weekend day, weekend night, middle of the week daytime, etc. and give you their impression based on what they would accept. Other than that, it's a neighborhood with lots of smaller single family homes, a park, lots of traffic on one edge, and the train tracks on another.
