Taveras to raise taxes in Providence 10% (bankruptcy, school, landlords)

last year Taveras imposed a significant tax hike in Providence, along with huge auto tax. Now, Taveras is planning on another 10% property tax increase. This would be close to a 20% tax increase in two years alone. Taveras is the worst mayor this city has ever seen.

no, that was Cicilini. He lied and put the city into near bankrupcy, although that could still happen. Even Cianci gave out 6% compounded yearly cost of living raises to retirees. So, no, he is not the worst. Just the one to come in with the worst situation handed to him and he HAS been up front with everyone about the financial problems of the city. The raise might not go thru if there is pension reform.

You are out of your mind Holly. Best mayors we've seen in a long time?? Best, because he declared that the city was a hurricane 5? I've talked with him personally; he is a tax hike zealot. Last year when I talked with him a Meeting Street school, he thought a 14% tax increase was perfectly fine, and not that much of an increase, he was actually proud of himself about the increase. I think it is assumed Ciccilini inherited a city with few fiscal problems, however, the city was already a mess. Not to defend Cicciline, but sadly, running for Congress he figured he had no shot if he was to be honest. Rhode Islanders couldn't handle that, particularly the state workers. They only want to hear that things are rosy. Taveras knows the only thing he can do for actual reform is to declare bankruptcy. But he won't declare it. City workers will NEVER give up what they have extorted over the years through threats, and dealings with politicians and the legislature.

He's hearing "crickets" from the unions, and University's.

Everyone wants everything for free. But when it comes time to pay up, suddenly there is an uproar.

This is an epidemic that you will see continue throughout RI and the country. Taxes must be raised on EVERYONE.

I'm not so sure about that. Maybe there was a hike in the rate per $1000 (I don't recall) but the valuations were greatly reduced. I paid less in property taxes, as did most people.

wxjay, you must be a state worker. The choice is clear; it is glaring; it is Taveras' ace in the hole. It is to declare bankruptcy. This will fix the state workers, little red wagon once and for all. Slash pensions, and medical benefits. They can't just continually raise tax out of proportion with the cost of living adjustments people receive, and trutffully, it is mostly the state workers who receive these benefits anyway. Private sector is a totally different world, and you really sense it when you hear the sense of entitlement these state workers reek of. Mention to a state worker receiving social security, and utilizing a 401K, and they shreek. They know the benefits they receive instead from the RI tax payers are superior; and many already are going to collect social security anyway on top of what they receive from the state.

Gradually, all the money makers will leave due to high taxes, and the money takers (AFDC, welfare, food stamp crowd) will stay.
