I'm not a big fan of Johnston mainly because I associate it with Route 6, one of the ugliest state highways I have ever seen. But there are nice neighborhoods. Yes, there are a lot of Italians in that part of RI (as well as nearby Cranston). I would personally choose to live in Lincoln because it is a nicer more suburban community that is still convenient to downtown if you need to go there for work or play. School system in Lincoln is also very good.

Cost of living - well, both MA and RI have high costs of living and high taxes. This is of course relative to where you come from (e.g., coming from the South or from California).
