Auto Tax rant
For those who are argueing over Rhode Island's auto tax, here's another....
I moved from North Smithfield to Burrillville in 2010. So last year (2011), I saw a 365 day value for both of my vehicles taxed in Burrillville. I received my tax bill from Burrillville and just happened to receive another from North Smithfield. I've taken care of the discreptency of billing from N.S. but what is odd is the value of one of my vehicles. The other vehicle had an identical pro-rated value per town. On a $10,000 car, Burrillville was $3000 exactly more expensive.
I called to question their data in which I knew all towns use NADA values. However, they came up with a 3rd price of $9,000?! I have one town on paper at $7300, another town on paper at $10300, and a phone call with a value of $9000....
I tried argueing with the town to get the lower rate with no luck. They gave me an excuse that the vin number doesn't give specifics to a car so one town might rate it as a convertible and another as a coupe!!!! What a joke.
Our towns had a phase out of the exemption in recent years and they can't get the uniform values!

That's why you see a lot of 10+ year old cars in this state! I know that no matter how much money I make, I am not paying that much in property taxes on a CAR! Anytime I tell people from out of state that RI charges prop taxes on cars they cannot believe it! That is ridiculous.

How could they have told you that with a straight face, that is baloney! The 17 numbers/letters of a VIN identify everything about the car: country, manufacturer, vehicle specifics, model year, model type, plant code, etc.

And I'd like to know why my car was given a higher value than 2 years ago.. when NADA has obviously gone down.
It's the biggest con game in the State.
Which is why I refuse to buy a new car. Besides the fact, I love my car... and it is one of the cheapest models to insure in this state.

You know that, and I know that, and the city/town knows that too, but this is RI, and just because it's true doesn't mean squat. I've lived here all my life, but I am really on the verge of giving up and following these rest of my family down south. When it comes to government, everything about RI is a complete joke - just not a funny one. Get out if you can.

As much as we love and miss RI the little extras the state throws at Rhode Islanders add up in a big way.
Even with a job transfer back to RI I doubt we could seriously afford to live in the state again

It certainly sounds fishy but whether it is or not depends on where he sleeps every night. If it's Exeter, then he's breaking the law with his Providence homestead exemption. I suspect he sleeps in Providence but he may keep no personal cars there- maybe he has state vehicles only at that address? His Exeter land is probably assessed as farm land which is a lower tax rate.
The article makes it sound like there's something wrong with getting a Providence homestead exemption at all! The tax rate in PVD is so high that the homestead exemption only brings it down to an acceptable level so most of us can afford to leave in the city. It would be disastrous for all residents of PVD to get rid of this exemption w/o seriously reducing the tax rate at the same time.
