I guess we are not alone, but Rhode Island isn't even mentioned. January 3, 2013

United Van: More leaving CT than entering
Well, here's some less-than-startling news to start off 2013 – Connecticut just isn't the popular destination it once was for households eager to settle down. And who can spot the trend better than a moving company like United Van Lines.
According to United Van's 2012 migration sample, more Connecticut residents moved to other states than moved in. Last year, the state's ratio of outbound moves to inbound ones was 56 percent v. 44 percent.
But take comfort, Connecticut, that you aren't alone. Nationally, the data shows a migration from other Northeast states, including New Jersey, New York and Maine, to states including the Carolinas, Oregon and Nevada, and Washington D.C.
Wait a second people, population decline is attributed to reasons other than just people moving out. The terms in this Pro Jo blurb are misleading, where do they show the breakdown between population decline, which is one thing, and migration rates, which is another. They are not the same.
When the death rate is higher than the birth rate, that's population decline. RI has one of the highest percentages of frail elderly in the nation, I suspect that is at least PART of the issue. As is typical, the Pro Jo doesn't do the best job of giving us all the facts, just the surface goop, scoop, poop- good or bad, that RI'ers whether instate or out, all too easily digest.
btw- United Van? maybe we should just quote the marketing team at Stop & Shop.

Movement by large movers such as United Van lines has always been a measurement used by the media. If you want to use Stop and Shop, so be it, but they are not national.
Unfortunately the migration out of the states mentioned plus Rhode Island has many retirees who still have good incomes in retirement. They have chosen and many who are now know as 2%ers to move to states that tax income and retirement benefits less or not at all. There are states that do not tax social securty, pensions or investment income. They only tax earned income. Death penalty taxes affect less of ones estate in other states. All or some of these items tend to give retirees a choice to move and many have taken it. What does this mean? Couples that make $100,000 with SS and pensions move from the state leaving behind a $4000-$6000 Rhode Island tax. I am sure not many of those who choose to move to Rhode Island make up that loss.
Or it could be just because all the old people in Florida like the warmer weather?
Most of the top 2% of Rhode Islanders have at least summer homes here and do pay many of our taxes. There is no mass exodus of rich people from Rhode Island. Just more propaganda.

Yes, the obvious is warmer weather, bluer skies, lack of snow, etc. That entices many, seniors or otherwise, to move there. But, it still is a difficult choice to make the move away from family, even if you only become a 6 monther plus a day to avoid Rhode Island residency. Still, economics make a it choice to move out of Rhode Island. We have chosen to stay, for now.

Too true! Certain posters live to post any negative sounding sensationalism. This is the second or third time for this same theme. The Projo prints only paragraph long "articles" now online with no analysis.
As a person who actually lives here I see that my ultimate waterview house continues to become no cheaper or less exclusive as house sales continue to rise and my recent Saturday visit to Apple Valley mall in Smithfield (never again) was nuts! Cars bumper to bumper including numerous out of state plates and no parking slots at all. What's up with that? Have you tried parking in downtown Providence recently? Could we have a few less people here please???
I'd like to just remind some of the Doomsday posters that a net exodus does not mean nobody's moving in. In fact,a .22% population decline means that there are plenty of people moving in, just not as many as are dying/leaving. I understand the significance of this, just putting it out there that thousands of people continue to move to the state and just to preemptively address a point, no they are not all "welfare-seekers."
