No, it is not exaggerated. Unless you've lived in Newport and tried to send your children to the public schools you wouldn't know.
What do you mean 'tried' to send your kids there? Given the 'horror' and the 'plague' it would be nice to hear some concrete details. I could understand if a parent wouldn't want to send their students to Pawtucket or Central Falls schools, but I know Npt isn't that bad.
Check the NECAP scores, Goodschools.org. ratings, GOLocal Prov best schools, Newport Patch -- Newport schools are horrible, especially the high school!
My family is also moving to Newport, RI in July. I have 2 that will be in 10th grade next year. I have found for them Middletown would be best. I am a little nervous. My husband is military and our current duty station is Lawton, OK. We are originally from SD. So hoping it will be a better fit than OK has been. I hope you find what you are looking for.

When Rogers was placed under academic probation, I took the children out of the school and sent them to private schools.
Out of 23 houses on our block, only one family sent their child to Rogers.
The "pack" mentality rules the high school.. and it is not a pack of educators.
Ask any substitute teacher on Aquidneck where they would prefer to sub........it won't be Rogers.
