Rhode Island v. Southern California
I'm going to be moving to Rhode Island in the next few months from Southern California with my husband and 2 boys. I've been researching the area and am planning to look for a place to rent (at first) in the Cumberland/Lincoln area, which from what I have seen, seems to be a good place for families.
My questions is what can I expect in terms of culture, recreation, attitudes, values and basic family life in Rhode Island versus that of Southern California (which from my perspective is very fast paced and always on the go with a lot of commute time for my husband) He will be working in Pawtucket when we move. I have never been to the East Coast and have no idea what people are like there.
Also, what is the emphasis on church going in Rhode Island, if any?? Is Rhode Island a very accepting place for people of all faiths? I know these are broad questions, but I'm just trying to get a feel for East Coast living! Thanks-Any help is greatly appreciated!

To check into Providence's cultural and recreation venues see the Cities web port at
City of Providence - Mayor David N. Cicilline
As to your other questions, there are distinct cultural differences between RI and Southern California. And for that matter with all of New England.
History and tradition are two of the most important components of life here. People can be 'reserved' - gruff, aggressive, but mean well and most have good hearts. They do say what they 'feel', which outsiders may consider 'rude'. Good food is easy to be found in Providence, with great Italian easy to find. Seafood also is excellent. Rhode Island is part of Red Sox nation.
Since Providence was founded by Roger Williams in 1636, who left Boston for religious freedom, Providence is a very tolerant place. Providence and all of New England might best be called 'east coast secular'- which means religion plays less of a role in the residents lives then it does elsewhere.

Hi amberrose, I'd like to hear your experience about living in these two places since you have moved to RI. We are considering moving to southern California from Providence due to my husband's job. Thank you!

RI is the sunniest, friendliest of New England states. IMO people are not reserved, as they are in Northern New England- on the contrary, being heavily Italian, many people are open and will tell you how they feel. Very extended family oriented, people are less competitive than in MA or CT, tend to drink a lot, drive aggressively but I'm sure you'll be used to that,- don't forget you are moving to the second most densely populated state next to NJ. I do think there is a kind of live and let live vibe here -somewhat, I wouldn't say its real laid back though.
