I'm trying to get some books to read to learn more history about the area. I bought (in the mail) a booked on the Gilded Age and would like to get recommendations on books about Newport, Boston, New England in general.

Thanks!
I can recommend a book that's specific to Providence: the Providence Preservation Society published a book, "Guide to Providence Architecture," which is really outstanding. It's available on Amazon.
Alfie's recommendation is on point; that's an excellent guide. For a brief and very visual history of a given town/neighborhood, there's a series of photo-based histories available in most public libraries. Can't remember the name, but they're rather thin, plastic-laminated paperbacks that you should be able to find by searching, say, "Pawtucket history" in a library catalog.
Also there's a fairly old multi-volume "History of Rhode Island", can't remember the author, but it is available at the older public libraries (Providence, East Providence, Cranston).
