Anyone living in Providence receive their 2013 property tax bills? How steep was your increase?

Not yet - got the car tax bills today and yesterday, though. I'm much more upset about that than the property tax bills. I really can't complain about those, considering how much they went down the past couple of years, due to RE values.

Mine was about a .9% increase. Car taxes are insane, they add about a thousand a year for 2 older economy cars.

Car taxes are criminal. My car depreciated a grand total of $20 between 2011 and 2012. Impossible. This and the new legislation allowing day car providers to unionize (they attempted to do this a couple years ago but there was such a public outcry they gave up) could be the straw that broke this camels back - when the time is right, moving back over the boarder into Massachusetts will happen. Which is sad. I really like so much about Rhody.

Indeed, I was not amused about those when I was still located in Providence. Hope Alfie reads this so he's aware and chooses his new car accordingly.

.9% increase? Not even 1%? You must have had a major drop in property value?

Wow, mine's not that bad! About $500 for an 05 Focus and an 03 Neon. We'll both probably need newer cars in the next couple of years, but you almost hate to upgrade!

That is extremely high. How many people will get a 9% pay increase? It's all about protecting those big pensions. Have you seen how the state workers balk at the idea of having a traditional 401K, and social security? They act like who ever would suggest that must be out of their minds. They were actually successful, conning the legislators they were in bed with to give them a 6% COL increase every year. Imagine; they didn't stop to realize how unsustainable that was.

It is higher than the 6% that was indicated. These are Providence city taxes. I began liking Tavares, but as his tenure lengthens, I find him with too few real long term solutions and far too ready to tax. I think he is also very much pandering to the Hispanic vote at the expense of other, more long established, residents. He's lost my vote for re-election.

You do know that they targeted East Side residents for the biggest tax increase? http://www.wpri.com/dpp/news/local_n...s-tax-increase
