Yup, one of the reasons we are leaving. RI politics for you - Drum Rock school is being closed, with the redistricting maps already out and the principal getting his walking papers. But, oh yeah, "it's not official, and it might not happen, we still have to have a public forum". Why are they closing one of the better elementary schools in the state?
And I hate the coffee syrup. I'll take the real thing anytime.

What makes Rhode Islanders Different

What makes us different:
We love Autocrat coffee syrup in our milk, NY System hot weiners from The Weiner Man, Del's Lemonade, clam cakes, cream style chowda, and see nothing wrong with our accent even though some say we sound like NJ and NY folks. Fohgeddabowdit! We are unique in so many ways as other posters in here will explain.
We live in NC now and everytime I have to talk to someone new they ask if I am from Jersey! (sigh!). You can never lose the RI accent no matter where you go or how hard you try (I don't try at all) and when you start talking with someone else from RI it comes back with a vengeance.
Good luck with this thread...hope you know what you started

You forgot Haven Brothers, Johnny Cakes, Clam Cakes, Love 22, The Bristol Parade, The Recess Pub, The Hot Club (as seen in Something About Mary), the fact that Family Guy is based on Providence and a memories of Watch Hill Fishing Trips, Rocky Point Park, Burlingame State Park and Lincoln Woods drownings.

My in-laws left Rhode Island 49 years ago for Indiana. They still have their accents and traditions. 20 years ago, if you offered a Hoosier Boy like me an Iced Coffee, you would have gotten a strange stare. It's my favorite drink now. I remember the first time my wife took me to her Mom's for dinner. Her Mom asked me if I wanted "gravy" on my spaghetti. "Gravy?" "Just spaghetti sauce, please!" When I think of RI'ers, I think of the most close-knit, passionate, family oriented people. They took a small town Indiana boy with a funny southern accent and turned him into a displaced Rhode Island Italian!

It's also their love of RI traditions that are uniquely RI's. There tolerance for corruptness in politics- even their endearing love for felons in politics (Buddy Cianci), whom the people voted in as mayor even with a criminal record. Their independent spirit and strong sense of family. We have to look at it realistically. We love our state, but many of us oldtimers are fed up with one of the highest tax burdens in the country and many of us are being forced out. We vote all the wrong people into office then complain about things never changing. We are sometimes too stupid for our own good, but even if we have to leave- most of us will miss RI. Go figure...

Unfortunately corruption exists in every state, it's just better known in Rhody because of our size. Rhode Island actually ranks intermediately for relative corruption these days.
