I have never been to Rhode Island...but I do look forward to the change. Having grown up entirely on the West Coast, I am sure it will be quite different!

Default Small kids = Cumberland

I have three young children and wouldn't dream of living in Providence. When we want culture or some city-life, we DRIVE from Cumberland to Providence and back again. The schools in Providence are definitely lacking and only if you can afford private schools would you want NOT to home-school your children.

Thanks for the info. We are definetely going to be staying in Cumberland. We are going to be renting for a few months at Cumberland Crossing...do you know anything about that area and the apartment complex?

The only decent neighborhood in providence is the east side. I wouldn't recommend living in Providence with 2 young children.... I'm from Cumberland, some of the apt complexes I'd watch out for too. See if you can get a rental in a townhouse condo complex rather than one of the rental-only apts near the highway. Unfortunatley this sort of development has brought negatives to Cumberland.

Default Cumberland

I lived in Cumberland for 35 years. Cumberland Crossing is a very nice upscale apartment complex, nothing to be leery of, believe me. You don't have to accept one of the end units near the highway. Another suggestion for you would be Lincoln RI, right at the very next exit off Rt. 295. A very nice apartment complex there would be Kirkbrae Glen. I believe Kirkbrae has a website too, not sure of it at the moment. Those are the two places I would live, apartment-wise and they have tennis and a pool. The other advice you got to stay away from Providence (by at least a decent radius) is right on. RI is very small, hubby can get to Pawtucket easily from just about anywhere. Preferably northern RI because the traffic is better heading south to Pawt. than it is heading north from the south of Prov. Plenty of nice shopping and excellent schools in Cumb. or Lincoln.
