All of us like to complain about the General Assembly, but 44% will be running unopposed.

If you are- or know of- an honest reformer- get on the ballot now or be prepared for more of the usual...

More opportunity than danger for legislative progressives

Maybe something is to be said for the term: "In a democracy, citizens get the government they deserve."

Actually, you could say that Rhode Island's government is not a democracy, because the most powerful politician, the speaker of the House, is not chosen by the people.

The Democracy part is that the Speaker's Assembly followers are elected by the people in their districts. In a republic democracy, everybody doesn't vote for everybody. But every Representative is elected by somebody. Even appointees are always appointed, directly or indirectly, by someone who has been elected. So, the Speaker is appointed/elected by Reps who have been elected by Citizens in their districts. When all's said and done, the Citizens are responsible for the House Speaker we end up with.

Just a circuitous and rambling way of still saying we get the government we deserve.
