My spouse landed a new job in the College Hill neighborhood of Providence. Due to personal reasons, she won't have a car for 6-12 months. She will have to commute to work via public transportation during this period.
I work in western Massachusetts (Hampden county). If we live close to her work place, I will have to drive 3 hours every day assuming no traffic. Although that's doable, it doesn't sound like a wise decision to me. We tried to find some area that would make my drive shorter but still allow her to travel to College Hill via public transportation. Since neither of us is familiar with Providence, we have yet to find such a place.
We looked into Worcester, MA, which is exactly half way between our work places (45 mins to each), but it seems impossible to travel between Worcester and Providence (College Hill specifically) via public transportation on a daily basis.
That's a tough one. North Smithfield near Route 146 and the 54 and 59X bus or Pascoag near the 9X bus are as close to work as you're going to get, but you'll really only shave 15 (Pascoag) to 20 (North Smithfield) minutes off your ride versus living in Providence while your wife ends up with a two-seat, over an hour ride. Peter Pan and Greyhound both run between Providence and Worcester but not at commute times.
