Hey Rhode Islanders! Where do you get your Rhode Island-focused news? How would you rate the news source(s) in terms of political slant? How would you rate the quality of the news coverage, irrespective of political slant? Be explicit; a numerical ranking is of little meaning without some commentary to back it up, though if you must: (1-10; 1 terrible, 10 fantastic).

Below I've listed some news sources I can think of in no particular order; it’s not a complete list. All have an internet presence; some are old-school media as well as internet and some are internet only. I didn’t include NY Times , the Boston Globe, or the Boston Herald, though each also reports on Rhode Island news from time to time.

Rhode Island Public Radio 88.1FM/91.5FM/102.7FM
Providence Journal
WPRI-TV OTA TV Channel 12
WJAR-TV OTA TV Channel 10
WLNE-TV OTA TV Channel 6
Providence Business News
the Pawtucket Times
the Valley Breeze
WPRO (Radio) 630AM
WHJJ (Radio) 920AM
Fox Providence
Go Local Prov

Other Rhode Island sources? Others that I am not quite sure how to categorize but that have useful, interesting info are Greater City Providence and Providence Daily Dose.

Apparently the Boston Globe has something in the works with regard to covering Providence more closely, stepping into Providence Journal territory. This golocalprov story from back in February suggests that the Globe is creating a Providence bureau. The Globe's editor Brian McGrory said:
Quote:
The Providence area, even all of Rhode Island, is appealing. It's a vibrant region with what we know to be a highly engaged citizenry and a lot of news.
The Globe has been hiring Rhode Island media members, including WPRI reporter Dan McGowan who covers City Hall perhaps better than anyone else in town.
While I am hopeful that the increased competition will force the local media to step up their game, I am concerned that it will have a negative impact on an already beleaguered local media.

It might not be based in RI, but I would add NECN to the mix. They give pretty equal coverage to all New England States and as far as TV news it carries the least bias. The local networks are horrendous. 12 used to be "OK" although I haven't watched them for years. Valley Breeze was always a good local news source. Again, the WERE. Chances are, they have become watered down like the rest of them.

Good riddance. That is truly a race to the bottom.

WJAR is no longer a legitimate news organization. It is a propaganda outlet that employs script readers. It is coverage you can't trust.

Agree. Some of the "commentary" which just pops up between the news readers is propaganda.

GolocalProv is also not a real news organization. It pedals a lot of rumor and innuendo with little depth and context. Should not be taken serious. Nearly everything it writes is unattributed with no real names put behind it.

It can definitely only be good. At best, competition will force the Journal to up their game. At worst, I can see the Globe pushing Gatehouse out of the picture and taking over the Journal.

I myself regularly read the Projo, Valley Breeze, and Pawtucket Times online. I typically watch either WLNE or WPRI/WNAC for RI tv news. I also regularly read/view other newspapers and tv news in Massachusetts as well.

I haven't found this to be true. I find a lot of their stories quite interesting and factual. It is New England based: Partners – GoLocal 24
