Default Insurance agencies

Can anyone tell me what they think the most popular/commonly used company people use for insurance (life, health, auto, homeowners, etc.) in Rhode Island? I am living in Virginia and possibly moving to Rhode Island, but I work for State Farm Insurance Co's and know that they do not have agencies in Rhode Island. Is it AllState, Nationwide, Geico? What do you all prefer or see used the most? I'd like to work for a successful but small agency atmosphere company.

Thanks for any info!

The reason that you have gotten so few responses is that the insurance market -- especially with regard to individual and group health is virtually destroyed by overly onerous state insurance regulations and elected officals INTENT on being TOUGH on insurance companies. As a result they have driven out all the health insurers except for two. With only two insurers and only one in the individual market, Rhode Island would be your LAST choice of states to work in the health insurance business in. In general, I can tell you that most of the northeast, (with the exception of CT and NH) but including NJ and NY are terrible choices to move to if you will be buying health insurance or selling it. As a RI, MA, CT licensed agent, I KNOW what I'm talking about.

Blue Cross probably has 80-90% of the RI health insurance market. United Health Care has the remainder.

For other insurance, check out Nationwide, Amica, or AAA. Don't know about Allstate. I *think* Progressive writes policies in RI--not sure.

Red face Amica Amica Amica

Amica is based in Rhode Island and is by far the best in my humble opinion.
This year our Rates WENT Down with Amica!!!!! We have a 3 houses and 2 cars with them. Their reputation is impeccable for settling claims too.

I'll tell you and i speak from experience as a Life and Health Agent that the health insurance industry for individuals and small groups has been all but destroyed in Rhode Island due to the most onerous state insurance regulations in the country. The majority of insurers left the state because of this and the last of them pulled out about 7 years ago. Now there is only one insurance company for individuals and families that offers four very expensive plans that you must get directly from the company which is Blue Cross Blue Shield of Rhode Island and the other which only has plans for the self-employed, small and large groups is United Healthcare which brokers sell. Blue Cross also has group plans.

For property and casualty you'll see more carriers. Legislators haven't messed that industry up nearly as badly as they have the health insurance industry.

I'll also mention that bills that would have fixed the state's regulatory problems and brought carriers back were practically presented on a silver platter to RI elected officials several years ago. You would have thought, if they cared about their constituents and wanted carriers back, they would have begged and pleaded for reforms like this and passed them as quickly as possible but NOOOOOOO. Only in Rhode Island do you have elected officials that insist on being different ....and the state suffers greatly as a result.
