Nothings definite but I am pondering things some lately.
I currently am in Southern NH, came here to give it a shot to see if I care for NH.. I really dont for my own reasons or its not as free as I perceived it to be and really no big deal. You're not getting that many more freedoms and I find it overrated and expensive. No real culture outside of little pockets of it here and there. I also cant imagine Manchester being anywhere near as fun as Providence either. I find Southern NH is pricey extension of MA, Boston area is for sure pricey. Theres not many places left to go in this region but I am sort of appeasing my family as well trying to make it work.
I am looking for a comparison to see if anyone has lived in both NH and RI. It be very interesting to know.
I am seeking more of an italian community also or it would be a plus anyhow and from my understanding, Providence has more of that.
I am from MA originally, moved around.. my mom is moving back to MA but she'll be right by Cape Cod so I am trying to find a compromise if I do move back near her and for someone like me, I find Providence or area might be suitable. I am seeking something with younger people to a point although not a 100% requirement. I am seeking a lower cost of living which I hear Providence area does have especially for someone on a fixed income. I dont work but may want to get back into work depending on the help I can get. I have not been very fortunate in life and just want to find the right fit for the remainder of the time I am in New England. Its a very expensive region overall but R.I could be a fit.
And whats car registration like? what are taxes like?
You do not say what your source of income is, but if you don't work, are you on some sort of fixed income or disability? RI does not "have a lower cost of living" (only in comparison to very high cost of living cities like Boston or NYC).
RI taxes are higher, which is no surprise, NH is one of the least taxed states in the nation (overall burden).
Car registration and taxes are sky high here. It was one of the downside of moving from Mass.
Thats the general consensus view yes. NH is not taxed for income or sales but they get you everywhere else or with property tax.. more risk for tickets as well or being stopped by police.. thats what they DONT mention. They more than make up for it. Property tax and high heating bills go into your rent though I am damn sure of. So yea, looking into R.I I know that in much of New England, theres no getting away from it so if I can just find a lesser cost area with more like me or less yuppie, I'll be more fine anyhow. Dont care too much about the crime image in Providence or area either as long as not a bunch of crap is going on in broad day light where it interferes with me.
If you want more "vibe" in NH - go to a college town, Keene is a cool place.
RI is as they say Ocean State - much to take advantage if you have a boat or kayak.
Yes taxes higher, but NH property taxes are real high depending upon town to pay for schools
Keene might be alright.. havent officially checked it out but its kinda isolated and not near much else I do know. The free state project is there though and I suppose if its more community oriented, I'd like it there.. its cheaper by NH standards I know than any other cities here or home cost on average is lower. College towns like Fitchburg or Manchester dont do it for me though really. If most places unless Keene is an exception rely on the college students to where they take up all the rentals and make up most of the scene, that place more than likely wont be for me as I am 37 and dont really wanna go back to college and am in the poor socioeconomic class.

It's no a consensus view. It's not opinion. It is determined by objective analysis. Overall, NH is in the bottom 10 states with overall tax burden.

Look at the RI Craigslist "housing wanted" entries if you want to get a taste of local conditions for those who can't afford to live here.
