It comes as no surprise that the councilwoman receives many complaints. I'm certain the Providence Police also receive many complaints. It's always been that way. It comes with the territory. That said, I firmly stand by my comment that it's one of the very few safe areas in the city. And I strongly disagree that one needs to be careful in that area. Careful of what? It's noisy, there's trash, public urination is not uncommon, but it's not like groups of drunk students are attacking people.
I don't know who said, "be careful". Just avoid. And certainly don't move there if you if you desire what most consider a good quality of life. Despite how rightly unattractive you just made the area sound. It is noisy, trashy with public urination. That the drunks don't attack people, is hardly a recommendation.

You said be careful in post #80.

I have had family living in Elmhurst since the neighborhood was built. The partying and ancillary effects on the neighborhood have definitely gotten worse in the last 3-5 years. The 02860 property management company has accelerated things by buying houses and turning them into privately-run dorms, even with their own "Hall" names. And it is not just PC students; college students from all over New England come to party there.

I share the sentiment about PC students, and would ABSOLUTELY not choose to live there. But in the context of this conversation with people talking about the "worst of the worst", I'm another one who finds it pretty laughable considering the notorious places not too far away ie. Chad Brown and Hartford projects, not to mention certain areas of South Providence that are frequently promoted here. At the end of the day, one must choose between public urination and gang graffiti...loud drunken parties vs. houses getting grazed with bullets...rich (but classless) college brats from NY and NJ vs. MS13, Latin Kings, Bloods and Crips...Bud Light cans vs. used needles on the sidewalks...Those are decisions that can't be avoided when discussing the worst of Providence.

Nothing new there. Whenever the party/drinking scene wasn't enough at XXX school, there was always PC...

You probably mean the 02908 Club. I've been in the neighborhood among their rentals at 8 a.m., when the party hasn't quite shut down...

MS13 in South Providence?!! Nope.

Used needles on the sidewalks?!! You have quite the imagination. Take it from someone who has walked the sidewalks of the south side extensively. Not once have I seen a used needle on the sidewalks of South Providence, let alone anywhere in the South Side.

You still don't know what you are talking about with regard to Providence. Never have, probably never will. And yet you prattle on...

Was I just talking about South Providence??? No SIR.

But is MS13 in Providence? That is a big YES. Are there gangs in South Providence? Another big YES. Are there needles discarded on the ground all around the city (to include South Providence)? Let me give your rose colored glasses a small hint that the answer ain't no. I don't know what streets/blocks you do walk, but...

Welcome back by the way.

Be careful as in where to live, not crime.

Every conversation regarding Providence, where ever, has to return to an exaggerated dissing of South Providence. It's an obsession.

I'm in Dallas now, gotta do something work related, then I'm going home, so I can't explore anymore of RI.

I went to Woodstock fair on Saturday, it came highly recommend by a lot of people and was touted as one of the biggest fairs in the area. When I arrived and saw all the out of state plates, I knew I'd be in for a treat. When I got inside, I was sort of confused. It looked like a county fair at some rural town in Iowa. I'm not sure if people were trolling me, but this fair sucked. My kid enjoyed herself, so I guess it wasn't all that bad.

I went to Newport on Sunday and it's a nice area compared to Providence and the outlying burbs, but parking (and cost of parking) can be a challenge. It was nice, but a little steep for my budget. I went to Easton beach, but I cut my time short due to Chinese tourists of the mainland variety. There's still no shortage of Italian restaurants down there.

After Newport, I went back to the city and asked my Lyft driver where I could get a late night haircut; he dropped me off at a barbershop on Cranston Street in a rough area. The haircut was pretty bad, but I didn't say anything because I didn't have enough hair left for the guy to fix, so I saw no point. In many places you find some of the best food trucks in the crappiest areas and the same seems to hold true for Providump. I don't remember what street I was on because I left the barbershop on foot with no destination in mind, I think it may have been Atwell or Broad St, but there were a large amount of night clubs and food trucks on a 3/4 mile stretch of ghetto road. If the place were a little cleaner, it would be a good tourist destination. I started chatting up the only white people on the street who were also lost tourists and we ended up in a shared Lyft ride to a casino. I didn't know there were casinos in RI! Apparently not a very popular destination as the place had about as many customers as the few remaining Kmart stores in America. After an hour of poker and a $75 Lyft ride to Warwick, I was ready for my flight out.

So in summary, I've decided I need at least two more visits to come to a conclusion about the place, but I don't think I could live in the city. It's a little bit too concrete jungle for me. I like the way Scituate looks, so I'm leaning more towards that rural life, but I'll have to check out other areas first. My initial desire to buy a multifamily home has been swept under the rug after touring various properties on Thursday and driving past other properties throughout the weekend because all the properties I saw were in really ugly places.

A few takeaways:

RI has the most courteous drivers in America, bar none. It baffled me on how often people would stop to allow drivers on cross streets to turn left.

A lot of people I spoke with talked as if they never ventured outside of the 2-3 mile radius of where they lived.

I didn't have a single Lyft driver who could navigate all of Providence without GPS.

I still don't know how to pronounce Warwick and Coventry because everyone says it differently. War-ick? Huar-ick? Huar-wick? Wark? Co-Ventry? Kauv-entry? Koven-tree?

There was a mile long wait at the Starbucks at TF Green while Dunkin Donuts had no wait at all. Future Dunkin franchisees should take note.
