The area around Miriam Hospital
is known as Summit. Look up Summit Neighborhood Association which is very active. It is generally safe (better than it was a few years ago- most crime is property crime which comes a few blocks away from Mt. Hope area) and very walkable. Houses are single and multifamily.
Pluses: walk to shopping, bus, park, very convenient, affordable. Downsides: proximity to Miriam with its ambulances and additional traffic and medical waste incinerator. Depending on the street you're on this may not be an issue. So, if you can't afford a better section of the East Side, I'd say go for it.

Everything Hollytree said is pretty accurate. I like Summit a lot, there are a lot of families and the housing stock is a good mix of single family homes and multi-families. It's very walkable (hilly though) and has a nice "main street" of shops and stuff and is close to Lippit Park and the walking trail down Blackstone Blvd.
As far as crime goes, the only thing you'd probly run into are random car break-ins around Christmas time. Don't leave anything valuable in your car and you'll be fine. The drug dealers and general criminals pretty much confine themselves to the Mount Hope neighborhood, south of Rochambeau Ave.

I have worked at the Miriam Hospital for 17 years and the area that you are speaking of from 8th-10th street isn't really that bad. The closer you get to North Main St the more crime you may find. The area does have a lot of nice tenement and single family homes. The Miriam hospital security vehicles patrol the area also. The closer you get to Hope Street the nicer the area. Good luck.. I hope this helps

We have lived on 4th St. right near Miriam Hospital for 9 years and we love it. Feels completely safe, even walking around at night. There is some petty property crime--cars broken into or stolen, some houses broken into for small goods like TVs (I assume it's people looking for drug money since they seem to only take easily transportable items). We put in an alarm system several years ago for this reason and haven't had a problem since then. It's a wonderful neighborhood in terms of friendliness, neighbors looking after each other, a number of multiracial families, etc. Very warm and accepting.
We're looking to rent our 3-4 bedroom house July 2008-July 2009 while we go on sabbatical to Africa, if you're interested in trying out the neighborhood before buying around here (or just interested in a 1-year rental). Would be happy to email you more info and photos.

Could someone help me locate a room to rent or is there a land lord with a vacancy. Money would be up front.

Drive through the neighborhood, tons of for rent signs. Or of course, craigslist.
