Ha! That sums it up. The great state of Texas, in the top 10 most dangerous states with a below average education system and the second highest number of uninsured in the country.
See ya!

Lets get the stats straight..Tx is "not" in the top 10% when it comes to most dangerous states....the honor states are NV, LA, SC,NM and FL.
None of the most dangerous cities in the US is located in TX regardless of the notorious mexican boarder. Uninusred motorists, what do you expect so close to Mexico (Laredo)? Get uninsured motorist coverage.
Education: RI is only a few notches above TX. Oh yes, how many illegals does RI have?
More people left RI in 2007 than any other state. Taxes, unions? Big government, what did I leave out...liberals?

1) I didn't say TX was in the top 10%, I said they were in the top 10 most dangerous states.
2) It would appear that last time a study was done, Rhody was 9 notches above Texas:
Smartest State 2006-2007
3) Your reasoning behind why people left Rhode Island is inherently flawed. But expect the situation to reverse. In Florida, for the first time in decades this year, population was actually lost. This trend is going to continue.

P.S. Almost forgot! It's laughable that you'd have the stomach to bring up the (relatively low) level of illegal immigrants in Rhode Island whilst defending the great state of Texas.
Good day.

Yes, all the "hot" states like FL, AZ, NV etc. are suffering. I am not a FL native but they (FL) used to have a bumper sticker: Leaving FL ? Take a friend ! I have not seen that sticker in a long time.
I have nothing against RI and I love Newport. :-)

I'll tell you a place that sounds like it would be perfect for you is Austin, Texas. Austin is growing, welcoming of newcomers, fun--I can't think of a better place in the U.S. to make a new start. Definitely check it out.

Yeah I agree you might want to check out Austin.

Crime ridden? The Hartford suburbs rank way below the national average for crime-just check the towns I have named at City data.
South Windsor crime rate 100- national average 323
Glastonbury 70
Wethersfield 153
Rocky Hill 165
West Hartford 167
Vernon 130
With crime rates half the national average or less- its silly to say the area is crime ridden.

I am from the NYC area and was temporarily in the Hartford area this summer. Part of my assignment was in Hartford and part of it in Middletown and Rocky Hill (very nice town by the way!). And my sublet was in Vernon, also a nice town.
While the crime part in Hartford is true, it is a small part of the whole area and it is completely safe to work in Hartford city in my view, the rest of the area is very very nice and affordable at least compared to areas near Boston or NYC. You probably have a better chance of getting a job than in Providence; RI has the highest unemployment of anywhere in the Northeast (almost 13%!!! No other state in the region is even at 10%, though NY City itself is close).
Finally, I think Hartford area lets you keep some of a "New England" atmosphere with a little bit of a "New York" atmosphere blended in (though certainly not a complete "NY" vibe like you would get down in Fairfield County). I found it to be a nice mix of both a small city look and commute with more of a big city culture and would love to go back if the opportunity presented itself. Good luck!
