Your mileage will vary- depending on exact location of apt.!!

What do you think about East Transit Street? Is there a lot of petty crime around that area? I didn't really get a good vibe when I was looking at an apartment on that street. I was also wondering about Brown St. near the high school.

I would live on East Transit but apparently I have a high tolerance for crime. Fox Point as a whole is pretty decent now, I wouldn't worry too much bout that street. Brown St is very nice, though I remember last summer someone getting mugged there in the middle of the night. Probably an isolated incident though, I mean you could get mugged anywhere.

Both RISD and Brown Univ have security forces that patrol areas near the schools so assuming they are any deterrent, it should be safer in those areas. I see them around quite a bit- especially the Brown forces. Of course, Prov police are excellent at giving out parking tickets in the area. In fact, that is what they're best at

So I am wondering what you all think about that area? And in comparison, what about apartments around Arnold, Williams, or East Transit streets?

in one post I wrote before reguarding federal hill, Mikey2 (formerly from RI) told me that you should ask the local police if it is safe to live there, me & my family made a move from far away and forgot what he said, but if we had remembered what he said, we wouldn't have made the mistake and moved to providence off broadway...so I am pushing Mikey2's advise on you...you should do it...if we only did..we wouldn't have to move again, by the way thanks Mikey2...

Sue, I had a feeling that you wouldn't be happy in that area because everybody I've talked to who lives there doesn't like it either.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion and I don't have time to argue with people about what they want to believe.
I'll say this straight up... probably more than 50% of what is posted on this board is NOT good information...some of it is absolute garbage.
I feel genuinely bad for people who are considering moving from out of state and base major life decisions on information from an internet board.
There are nice areas in RI...East Greenwich, Barrington, Cumberland, Smithfield, Coventry, North Kingstown...just to name a few.
Having said that, you need to have a good job in hand because the cost of living is very high and job prospects are just about non-existent.
Just about everyone I talked to on a recent visit is very angry (fed up) far beyond belief and would love to get out if they only could. Many people are fearful of what's going to happen this winter with oil being over $4.30 gal. (especially the poor and those struggling to make ends meet).
Make no mistake...this is a national recession (or depression if it turns into one) and just about everybody feels it.
I lived in RI my entire life and have never seen anything even close to this.
Mikey.

You just said it yourself- it's a national recession. Why move from RI if you have a job? Personally, I don't know anyone who wants to move from here and can't- in fact, I don't know anyone who wants to move from here at all. I suppose it's the circles an individual runs in.

yes, it was very tough not knowing anybody or anything, moving somewhere you only used to vacation at, and relying on a bunch of strangers opinions for information. But Mikey I did value your opinion because my nephews name is Michael and I call him Mikey, so I took it as a sign. Actually Mikey, I had printed out what you said, so I wouldn't forget, but it was in a box somewhere being ready to move. So now I'm working on moving again in the state, and I will find somewhere where I will be happy, but right now, I am happy that I'm finally living in RI & back up north again, where my soul feels good. Thanks again.

Good for you for not shooting the ****s or defending yourself in anyway. The ACLU would have them living in your house now and screaming they were some how victims of discrimination. The ONLY groups in this country with NO rights are poor and middle class white men. Welcome to America.
And WHY do we have the cops pissing away time and money on speeding tickets and hooker busts when they should be going into areas they KNOW have places where drugs are sold and shutting them down? They're scared over getting shot pulling over a speeder with tinted windows? How about running into a crack house and burning it to the ground?
