Question What are Pawtucket neighborhoods like?

I'm searching for apartments in RI ... I'm relocating because of work. I found a few places in Pawtucket, but don't know what the neighborhoods are like ... I've heard that anywhere off Broadway is not so great in terms of safety. What's the area around Pawtucket Ave at Carver Street like?

That area isn't bad at all, not too much crime outside of the random car break-in. The streets off of N Main/Pawtucket Ave are kind of gritty, but as you get closer to East Ave they're really nice.

Meh...I'd live in Providence if you can. If not Warwick or Cranston. I would not personally like to live in Pawtucket...the extra $100 in rent or so is worth it

Also considering moving to Pawtucket. Does anyone know if living around Baldwin Elementary is safe?

Having rented in a couple of places in Pawtucket before we bought a house here, I'd say that there are just a few neighborhoods to avoid, namely the two housing projects (Prospect Heights and Galego Court) and the little Bermuda Triangle around Magill Street which for some reason is a magnet for trouble. That's where Baldwin Elementary is located, and I'd give that immediate vicinity a miss.

The Pleasant View area off Broadway looks rundown, but isn't unsafe, just tends to be poorer. Superficially it looks like an immigrant neighborhood, but scratch the surface and you will find a large population that has lived there for 40-50 years, the kind of people who keep an eye on things and call the police whenever they see something or someone suspicious.

The Woodlawn area around Carver that the OP asked about is nice; a friend of mine used to live not far from there. Woodlawn in general is not bad, except for the above named area around Main/Magill. (Even so, a couple of years ago some punk robbed the little convenience store there which is run by a well-liked immigrant African family, and the whole neighborhood was up in arms, and helped to catch the guy.)

The best areas in Pawtucket are Countryside (bordering Seekonk, MA), Quality Hill, and Oak Hill. Countryside is primarily single family, so you won't really find apartments there. The other two areas are mixed single and multi-family neighborhoods, so rentals exist, but in smaller numbers, and priced a bit higher.

I have found people in Pawtucket to be friendly, so the best advice I would give is to look at a few places, and talk to people living on the street. This is a good time of year, because people tend to be puttering in their yards or porches, or walking along the street (they are mostly good walkable neighborhoods.)

Also, look for an owner-occupied property rather than an anonymous ant farm if you are concerned about safety. For example, an apartment like this one: Victorian Gem - Utilities Included. (I know the landlord, and they really are good neighbors.)

When I lived in Pawtucket I lived in Darlington right off Central Ave. I liked it a lot, there was plenty of conveniences within walking distance and I never once felt unsafe. The neighborhood is pretty much mixed single family houses on small lots and multi-families, with more single families the closer you get to Newport Ave and Seekonk. Slater Park is really nice too and right down the road.

I agree. Darlington is a nice area in Pawtucket. Not a bad area at all. If I were moving to Pawtucket, I would choose to live in Darlington.

I moved to Darlington in 2006 with my Husband and two young sons. I would never move to an unsafe neighborhood. We are very happy here. Trash pick up is free(used to pay privately at our Mass. home) we have street sweeping to keep areas clean, there is a revitilization coming through this small city and the old mills that once were the lifeblood of Pawtucket, are being turned into beautiful loft lving. We have a beautiful park off Newport Ave., Slater Park, with a Loof Carousel, walking and bike paths, playground, animals, and Dagget farms for yummy snacks. We have Farmers Markets every Sunday. You have a 20 min drive to Providence with easy public transit, shopping, dining and culture. My neighborhood is an older neighborhood, as most of Darlington is, bult in 1947-1950's consisting of Cape style homes. Most of the people here have lived here for 40+ years. I sit outside in my garden and all I hear is birds, some dogs occasionaly and children playing. My children attend Fallon Elementary and are doing well. The school scores are not all that high but are improving. My children are not lacking the educational resources they need to succeed in this day and age. Rhode Island actually has really high standards. We are smack in the middle of N.Attleboro and Seekonk Mass. Pawtucket is a great location for someone who works in Providence, want's all the convienences of city living with a quiet hometown feel.

It is a fine area overall. Some well kept streets and yards.
