Also check out Exeter/West Greenwich, near Whispering Pines (on the agricultural campus of URI) as well as areas near Arcadia Park.

Wow ...
I, too, am thinking of moving up to the Providence, RI from DC! Really don't know much about the area other than a couple of overnights in Newport on the way to the Cape -- absolutely LOVED the area (20 yrs ago)! Planning to explore the area mid-Aug. Hearing East Providence is the place to live. Wondering if there are any divorced/single folks in the area interested in hiking, tennis, biking, etc. Thanks for any insight/information you might have on the area!

Sara, I think you may have confused East Providence with the East Side of Providence...it certainly can be confusing! The "East Side" is a great place, historic homes, lots of great areas, clos to Brown Uinv. and RISD. East Providence is a completely separate city....

Just spent a couple of days in Providence. For a small city, it is very impressive. Seems to have had a lot of new construction in the last 10 years, with major ongoing condo construction.
Good luck!

Thanks everybody!!!
For the ideas. I know now that the Western part (and some on the South) may be what I'm looking for.
But Block Island? Sounds lovely but is waaaaay out of my price range.

I agree. Check out the Northwest Corner or South County (Washington County). The Northwest is not by the water, if that's what you're looking for then go for South County.

Plenty of large fresh water lakes here in the NW of Rhode Island. We tend to think of ocean or bay water as the only waters in Rhode Island. I mean we are the Ocean State.

You want BI without the price tag- try prudence Island (its Portsmouth zip code) the west side of the island has the most beautiful sunset in all of RI.
Best kept 'local' secret in all of RI. Spend a day over there with your bike and you may start dreaming of Island Life.
Otherwise west of 95.
