The answer is because you're in the non-profit field. I don't know anyone (in other fields) with anything over a high school diploma who makes less than 35K to start, meaning they continue to receive raises and benefits that push them significantly higher than that as the years go by.

I have a child with special needs as well. It is hard. I hope you find a good solution.

Except for the Mexican food. Seriously, RI has NO good Mexican food.
Tortilla Flats is your best bet, mostly because you're so wasted on the margaritas you can't taste the food.

Do you mean tex mex or authentic mexican food because there's quite a few small mexican restaurants around town.

I don't want to derail the thread topic. I'll just say I've tried Tortilla Flats and many other Mexican restaurants here and they are terrible!

Funny, huh?

But in all seriousness, I would agree that job opportunities in RI are tough. However, I actually make way more money here than I did in FL. I'm not rich or anything, and maybe I just got lucky, but my experience in every department here has been better than in that swamp-hellhole also known as Florida.

and the opposite for me. i think we have been here before, you bad mouthing florida ( where your from ) and me RI ( where im from ) in another thread. i make double the money here and the cost of living is less. yes the job market everywhere is tough right now, but for most including a lot of my friend and family who still are in RI, they are all having a tough time. the state doesn't help either with the high taxes etc. and lets face it, this thread is about how do people in RI make it. so that was my 2 cents. they deal with it....

btw, i miss the italian food.. not a fan of mexican food.

Yes the thread is about how do people make it in RI. And your initial response was completely unproductive and a complete canard in so much as it said "you don't make it." That was pretty much the extent of your post.

Therefore I thought I should provide a counter example. I'm sure we could find plenty of anecdotal evidence of people in FL right now who could effectively echo your sentiment. I believe the original poster was looking for a response involving tactics, not empty malcontent rhetoric.

I would say one thing that could make life easier would be getting a roomate. That's what I did here until I made enough to support myself.

The thing about RI is, those who "don't make it" here tend to give up and leave the state.

What's left is those who are "making it" somehow.

Well, now that is actually unfairly kind to our state. Just as in all states, there are plenty of people in Rhode Island who "haven't made it". (I'm sure the folks in the tent cities would differ with you.)

Yes, of course. And I guess when I said "leave the state" it could also mean "leave this earthly realm of existence"!
