Romance in Providence?
In a few weeks I will be moving from Canada to marry my online boyfriend. Although he is a native RIer, Providence is new to both of us. I'd love to know some of the places to see & things to do for a couple of middle aged romantics, who love art, music, history & the outdoors. Our first meeting will be when he picks me up at the airport. Any suggestions for somewhere private, romantic (possibly waterfront) to spend our first couple of nights? Any ideas would be appreciated.

If you want to stay in Providence, I would recommend the Renaissance Hotel or the Biltmore. You could see Water Fire (check for dates), go to Federal Hill, and see the East Side. The East Side has historic walking tours (contact Providence Preservation Society for times) and the RISD museum.
You could also visit Newport by taking the ferry which runs from Conley's Wharf. It's a wonderful 40 min. boat trip.

Thanks, Holly. Btw, I found a house from the link you posted for me awhile back. It's a perfect colonial home in E.Providence. I like all your suggestions, but hope to find somewhere a little more intimate, out of the way for our first night or two. I can picture something simple, rustic...perhaps a beachfront cottage. Is there much around that would fit the bill?

Great- glad to heat that! No beach front cottages in Providence alas. There are hotels near water in Bristol, Newport, Narragansett, Watch Hill... Maybe Craigslist has some vacation properties still available...

Head out to Little Compton/Tiverton somewhere maybe.
Not quite so many people/tourists as in the usual hotspots, you get some pretty outdoorsy things and it's one of the few leftover 'New England' spots in Rhode Island.
Good luck.

Rhode Island is a beautiful state... in most areas. A romantic night would be a nice Dinner on Federal Hill, and then maybe a walk down at the East Side to see all the activities going on there! If you want a day event, going to Westerly is fun, or Point Judith! That's where you see the true "New England" portrayal of Rhode Island!

There are plenty of country spots out in Western Rhode Island too. Just drive about 30 minutes west and you would never know Providence was so close. About half the state is actually still country.

Don't forget to stop at Prospect Terrace. It has a great view of the city and is a great place to get lost in each other.

Bristol, RI is awfully charming -- can't go wrong there.
