I completely agree with this, I am from the Providence area, and as bad as crime is there, I was shocked how bad it is here in Portland, I felt safer in the Providence metro area. There are many people from the Latin American countries and African countries living in Rhode Island and along the border towns in Southeast Mass.

Rhode Island is 83% non-hispanic caucasian. I am originally from FL which is only about 65% caucasian. That's a hell of a difference! And if you crunch the numbers you will find this discrepancy exists when Rhody and other New England states are compared to Southern states in general.
This doesn't make us any better or worse anyway. But I just get sick of hearing the same falsities repeated on this site over and over again. It really is discouraging to know that some people who are not from the area come here and get downright false information.

Bravo! Rhode Island gets more than its fair share of bashing due to the fact that those who stereotype Rhode Islanders don't know what they are talking about. Your post was appreciated.

When it comes to crime, well, crime is just that ... but what's considered crime in Providence certainly isn't like the crime scenes out of LA or the Bronx ... still ... it never hurts to be streetsmart wherever you are because crime can happen anywhere at any given time and oftentimes in the least expected places. If you're from another city all together you'll be certain to miss any kind of criminal activity, but if you're from another small suburban town and never had the taste to actually live in a larger city where you'll find a slew of diversity then I'd say Providence is probably not a place you'd crave living it...but will truly enjoy visiting.
The beauty of an enriching life and where ever you chose to move and live (or even visit) is everything you make it to be... I found all of Rhode Island to be quite lovely ... and regardless of the "hearsay" ... I'm sure you'll find it to be as well.

Bravo to you as well. Positive posts about RI warm my heart as I was once a Rhody born and bred and now live down south. I love it here but one can never ever get the Rhody out!

Providence is a sewer, let the illegals have it, that way it will remind them of the sewer they came from.

Or a legal alien (as many are in RI)? Or a visiting student at a university (yes, people from other countries come to Brown to learn and don't speak fluent English)?

Roger Williams was one of the first illegal aliens to arrive in Rhode Island and he had a criminal past that had caused him to be expelled from Massachussets. Fortunately he was welcomed by the Native American Sachem who famously said, What Cheer!
Providence has served as a welcoming city to tens of thousands of Portuguese and Cape Verdian immigrants in recent years.
The new comers are hardly a plague, they are an enrichment to the bubbling multi-cultural boulibaise. I have moved from RI, but whenever I go back I find it better and better, more and more beautiful and more and more prosperous! What Cheer.

When you "assume" you make yourself into a three letter word that is hiding in the word assume.
The City of Woonsocket and surrounding towns had a vibrant French speaking population for many many years. The kids might speak English, but they would have to translate for their parents and grandparents. It was very possible to go to school, conduct business, attend church and participate in community events and not to speak English. I can't help but wonder how many languages jtgorham is fluent in . They seem to speak the language of hate, but to fail simple logic and reason.

One has to wonder why you hate Providence so much that you actually posted that sad and inaccurate remark. Are you a native born Rhode Islander or a transplant from somewhere else and disappointed that you didn't find what you were searching for in RI?
Rhode Island's varied immigrant population has enriched all of New England and you can see it in the culture, the food, the song & dance and...yes...in their positive attitudes.
