Probably a lot more than you think. Then, except for those who were shanghai'd from certain other countries (like China), it was extremely difficult for Europeans to slip in illegally. Not only that, immigrants had to pass health inspections. God knows what infiltrates in with those who slip through borders today. I could name some but that would really wander off topic.
