Default Does RI Have Any NY or NY Sports Influence?

I've heard/read some conflicting things from people about RI.
Some have said that despite Providence being an hour from Boston...it has a good, substantial Yankee minority.

I've met a few people from RI...but never any of them being NY sports fans.

I'd like to ask
1) Does RI have a good amount of NY sports fans?
2) If so...where...statewide or in certain places?
-For what teams and sports?
-Is it more than other NE states excluding CT (which is really tri-state NY)
3) Why would RI have an influence for NY sports?
-Is it the transplants...the Italian connection with NY...or just that RI is southern NE like CT?

Thanks.

1. yes, RI does have a decient sized Yankee fan base, but still in the shadows of Red Sox fans, but still plenty of support.
2. I think its generally accross the board, although Red Sox fans tend to gravitate towards Pawtucket/Providence for obvious reasons. I do know that the Norwich Navigators of CT were affiliated w/ the Yankees (they since have become the Defenders of the Padre farm system) and so I remember growing up in South County and attending few games with plenty of yankee support in the area. I even saw david wells pitch a perfect game as he was coming off rehab in the farm system.
People generally associate themselves with Yankees or Red Sox based on thier connection with each particular city. I.e. my family is from the boston area = red sox fans ect.
In terms of New England, generally everyone is Red Sox fans/nation EXCEPT Fairfield county in CT which is part of Metropolitan NYC
The Same occurs for Giants/Pats and Celts/Knicks
hope that helps

I don't know much about RI...but I do know the CT statement was a bit inaccurate.

CTers are mainly NY fans in all sports in FF County and in NH County as well as Litchfield.
All THREE counties are part of the NY metro region, in whole or part.

Hartford leans towards Boston...but it varies based on how well the team is.
East CT goes for Boston...but CT in general is more tri state NY than NE sports based.
As a local from CT I get annoyed with how Boston fans feel they have some outright claim to CT even though most of CT is closer and more economically connected to NY.

RIers being Yankee fans goes back to the high number of Italian immigrants in the state routing for Joe DiMaggio.

Most of New England roots for the Sox as the city of Boston is usually considered the city which represents the region.
But hey at least we care. I'm willing to bet that the people of NYC barely knows there is a state beyond New Rochelle.

TomDot just reiterated what i said before, so my statement was def not innacurate.

Most of CT roots for Boston.
It's not just FF County.

New Haven County is a short metro north ride away from NYC.
The economy, climate, and culture for much of CT is much more in common with tri state NY then New England.

Eastern CT roots for Boston and considers it the regional city...but southern/western CT are defintely NY while central CT is split.

You are wrong if you think CT outside FF County goes considers Boston it's regional city.
New Haven is half as far to NYC and has a local train there...but yeh...it would make sense for them to consider Boston their regional major city.

I just can't stand that arrogance that because CT is NE it must be a Boston sports/culture state.
That is such an arrogrant misnomer outside of Eastern CT.

There is no political entity called tri-state NY. CT is now and always has been one of the New England States. Just because the stain of NYC has spread into SW CT does not make it a part of NY. As much as people like you wish that NYC would annex SW CT it won't happen.

The problem is yours. People like myself in Boston don't even think about western or southern CT.
In other words, we don't give a cr-p who you root for.
You sound insecure.

Personally I'd prefer it if CT didn't associate it's self w/Boston sports. It's tough enough to get tix as it is.
