I believe you'll also find some very positive posts.

I lived in Providence for 6 years, and earlier in North Kingston for about 10 years, summers. While I could say negative things about RI, most of my memories are positive and upbeat.

Many people on the board are moving and dissatisfied and often they post harsh reviews.

Why don't you ask a few questions and hopefully you'll get some reasonable responses.

Good luck!

I haven't lived in RI for about ten years so much of my knowledge is undoubtedly out of date.

A few folks post here who are still living in RI and may be more familiar with neighbourhoods.

However, when I did live in RI, I thought Edgewood and Warwick were very family friendly.

Farther out, I liked Bristol, Barrington, Rehobeth (just over the RI/MA line), and even North Attleboro. In the south, I love Wickford, Wakefield and the other towns near Newport.

All of these have homes of differing prices. I don't know about rentals.

When I rented I lived in Providence proper, and when I lived down in Kingston, my family owned a home and I used it on long weekends and summers.

I never considered Rhode Island dangerous; and perhaps it has changed.

Hope some of this helps.

sure, Thanks for taking your time and elaborate on the subject . I will take every city that you mentioned and see what I can come up w/ . I did however like the Seekonk MA, it looks like private life style and my judgment was based on the pictures in the MLS housing.. but that the kind of open space I like not too open and not narrow .. again Thanks

Yes, I believe Seekonk, MA is nice. I had a few friends who lived there, and visited occasionally. I believe it is where they have a biggish shopping centre.

Good luck with your search. Try to make a visit or two before you commit. I know how hard it is to move, and with a family, more stressful.

Hi - are you looking for public education for the kids? I would strongly recommend Barrington. It's only 10-15 minutes from Providence (we lived there for 8 years and my dh worked in downtown Providence). It's very safe, pretty (on the water) with excellent public schools.

It is expensive, and can be very snobby and elitist (it has a deserved reputation with the rest of the state) but it's a good community to raise a family. I also recommend the Greenville area of Smithfield or Lincoln for the public schools.

So. Cal to RI? Remember, we have winter here in New England. Not bad, really, compared to Northern New England.

I dunno what you mean by people not getting along?

RI has gotten expensive in the real estate dept., so realistically weigh what you think you are going to afford. Our taxes are high. Our overall tax burden (all taxes) is high...we are currently ranked 8th, down from 5th. CA is 15th, last I saw.

Check out the following site for school rankings:

Crime isn't bad...there are sections of Providence you don't want to be in at night, but most of the state is suburban or even semi-rural and safe.

As mentioned, Barrington is very nice. The East Side of Providence is nice if you don't want to commute. And certainly don't rule out the MA border towns. I live in South Kingstown, so I'm not familiar with the schools and community news up around the city. But any other questions you have, I'd be glad to try and answer.

I agree with Bristol and Barrington as nice places to live. I am not sure about the school systems but if you are used to being by the beach, I'd also look the Narragansett area. Depending where your office is, the South County area wouldn't be more than 30 minutes away.

Make sure to explore the culture and restuarants in Providence when you arrive!

I got married in Santa Monica and would move out of New England to go to California in a second! I hope this is a great job!

Rhode Island has the best beaches in New England. Providence is aan awesome city with lots of arts and culture and offers everything Boston does with less attitude and price. Great public and p rivate schools for your kids... the surrounding areas in MA are all nice, too. You will not regret moving to RI. Taxes are high as is auto insurance, but coming from So. Cal, you'd probably be used to that, am I right?
