East Providence -- What's it Like?
Does anyone have any experience with East Providence? (Not the east side, but East Providence?)
I'm thinking of moving there. Drove through it last night and was impressed. Not a wealthy area, but very neat, clean, nice bike path nearby.
I think it is less expensive that the East Side, and yet still very close to Providence and all it has to offer.
Looks like lots of Portuguese in the area (who are house proud, keep lovely gardens, neat homes) and some artists.
Those are my initial impressions. I'd like to hear from others.
Thank you!

I think East Prov is a very underappreciated area, especially the Riverside (near water, boat launches, carousel, parks and a golf course) and the Rumford area. Rumford area has the reservoir. Parts of the central city are not so great, but it kind of functions as a good alternative to the higher cost of the East Side & is only 10 mn away. Haines park, Squantum Woods are very nice- libraries are good- schools not so good but it does have Providence Country day and the Gordon School as well at Bayview Academy.

I thnk you are right on target. Other areas such as Rumford and Riverside are also part of East Providence and are quite lovely.

....and you're also right about the Portuguese.....they have some excellent Portuguese restaurants on Warren Ave.

I also agree. Especially when one compares to many areas in Prov. -- including the East Side -- Riverside and Rumford can be quite nice. They're not hip and cool like parts of the East Side, but they have some lovely neighborhoods and some surprisingly good housing deals for the area (on or close to water for reasonable $$$, for example). Rhode Island Monthly magazine recently named Riverside an "up and coming" neighborhood, for example.

Having grown up in East Providence, I agree with all of the comments here in this thread. Riverside and Rumford are certainly great sections of the city. Unfortunately, where I grew up (N County St.) has gone slightly downhill lately, as I evidenced from trips home and seeing the types of people hanging out there now and the additional noise and ruckus that wasn't there before.
But overall, yes East Providence is a great place to live.

This thread has been a revelation. Previously I thought the East side or Providence WAS East Providence...
How are prices in Riverside and Rumford?

I live in Rumford after relocating from CA and I love it. Its a very family friendly neighborhood so if your looking for an amazing nightlife, you probably wont find it here. Its really close to downtown. It takes me about 10 minutes taking the streets to get to the mall and the same to get to work in downtown providence. In the afternoons during high rush hour it takes me about 15 minutes to get home from downtown so its perfect for us right now. It's clean and neighbors, at least mine, are very friendly.
