Moving to RI
Hi everyone, I just have a couple of questions. My fiance and I are moving to RI from Portland OR. I noticed apartments are quite expensive over there. I found one that is in Fall River called Border City Mills. which are in my price range (2br under 1000$) has anyone heard of these? are they in the ghetto? I'll be working in Warwick and don't have a problem with commuting. is traffic bad?
Thanks

dont live in fall river. You want to look on the East Side of providence. fun, artsy, eclectic neighborhood similar to that of portland. You can find a 2 bedroom for $1000 no problem. Check craigslist and learn about the area.
ps. the east side is a better commute to warwick than fall river.

I'd think twice about that. You would be commuting via 195 into Providence and the traffic would be bad every morning and night. Are you sure you can't find something else in Rhode Island in your price range? Fall River in general is an depressed old mill town, so that area very well could be sketchy, but I really don't know.

One time I had lunch at Pizza Hut in Fall River. I ate at the pizza buffet. Some of the slices I bit into, I realized the pizza dough was full of mold. Since then, I've never been to a Pizza Hut again. Also, I'm not to keen on visiting Fall River again either.

I agree that the East Side of Providence has a similar feel as Portland and is a great area in which to live. You may also consider checking out Pawtuxet Village which is in Warwick and has a quaint walkable main street. There is also the Edgewood section of Cranston, 5-15 minute commute to Warwick depending on location which also has charm/historic houses and minutes from the East Side of Providence. A third area to consider would be Wakefield in South County, very close to the beach, has a nice little downtown area and is about 25 minutes from Warwick. Fall River is definitely not your best bet.

If your going to work in Warwick I would consider living in Warwick. Warwick and Cranston are OK. Fall River can be OK too, but your commute will be stressful.
I lived in Providence, and commuted back and forth from New Bedford, and there were times when the traffic was very bad, especially with a winter commute. The problem is the Washington Bridge which connects East Providence with Providence, it can back up well into Seekonk if there's an accident. Eventually, I found a gym in Dartmouth I would go to afterwork and leave there around 6-7pm and I would miss it; but I also didn't get home until much later.
Also, you'll notice that there is a lot of construction going on right now moving the bridge over the water, to help eleviate the congestion of traffic going into Providence. This won't be completed for another couple years.
The East side of Providence is nice but can be pricey due to the desirability of the area along with the influx of Brown University and Rhode Island School of Design students.
