New law just changed CT civil unions to marriage. Massachusetts already has gay marriage. RI does not recognize gay marriage (however the loop hole accepts foreign marriages) eventhough these two states are a hop skip and a jump away. Any opinions on if RI should allowfor gay marriage or unions?

I don't see any harm in allowing it. The country's got enough issues at the moment so if we can do something small to help with the pursuit of happiness we should at least consider it.

Should Rhode Island allow "gay" ie homosexual marriage?

...not if they have a shred of sense in their heads......

i always thought that it was illrgal for the judicial branch to make laws. what gives one person that right is outrageous. if it is against the law that judge should be terminated.

Although there is a vibrant gay community in Rhode Island there doesn't seem to be an emphasis placed on promoting gay marriage law.

What IS outrageous, is the idea that there are a people who believe they should have the right to "vote" on another person rights, specifically on what should be considered a "civil right." This is segment of people that are not able to share in their pursuit of happiness guaranteed to all citizens under the law equally to the way heterosexual people are allowed to.

Affirmative action, quota systems, immigration issues are examples of agenda items that SHOULD go up for a vote.

This is the reason why I've now decided to investigate relocation to Hartford. My partner and I deserve to be treated equally.

Knowing this state, it'll be the last one to allow it! LOL! But.. let's hope not.

Well... with Mass and CT already allowing it.. the pressure is on for this armpit state. lol We'll see what happens.

This "armpit state" is far more socially advanced than basically the entire South. The fact that we allow same sex couples who married in another state to get divorced is, sadly, light years ahead of most of the country.

I've fuond that most Rhode Islanders who think this state is so "conservative" are usually comparing it to the rest of New England. Not exactly a realistic comparison.

Compaer us to the rest of the country. We have no death penalty, legal medical marijuana, and the lowest Bush approval rating in the country.

We need to recognize same sex marriage, it's true. But the polls seem to reflect that the population is more open to this than you realize. The problem isn't the people of Rhode Island, it's the Leadership in the Statehouse. If the people come to recognize that our Democratic Leadership is not as progressive as they might think, this could change.

And I believe it will, sooner rather than later.

As a gay man who lives in the south, Memphis tn to be exact you guys are way ahead of us I've wanted to move to rhode island mass or anywhere in that area bc I've heard and hoped eveyone is a little bit more open minded than the folks down here I work in a mall and walking across the parking lot the other day I got called a ***! Its sad but true that people in the south are bigits not all of them but I'm definitely out numbered. The gay community in Memphis is large but given the area we live in most live up to the stereo type that the bigits have layed out for us and a lasting relationship between two men here is slim to none I can't wait to move to the east coast

Consider Connecticut as well- we also have Gay marriage now- and laws against hate crimes and discrimination in the private and public sector are strict. Gay teachers and administrators here in Public schools are free of discimination.

You can feel free here- and not be looked down upon.
