What is Rhode Island like?
Such a small state.
What is it? Urban? Suburban? What is the culture and economy like?

Rhode Island consists of 39 towns and cities, the majority of which touch the sea coast. It is the second densest state in the country after New Jersey. We have approximately 800 people per sq mile on average. The density however, is very lopsided, because the majority of the population lives in the north east quadrant of the state (from Woonsocket down to Warwick). It has a lower socio-economic standard of living than Massachusetts or Connecticut, but can be a nice compromise to get more house for your dollar.

Not really much of a joke....mostly truth. Taxes are high, higher than MA. Corruption isn't unique to RI, it happens everywhere. Also, RI now has the highest unemployment rate in the US as it recently beat out MI. But, it truly is a beautiful state with lots to offer - coastline, history, architecture, and so many incredible restaurants!

Definitely a beautiful state, with nice ocean scenery, nice rural areas to the west and wonderful beaches. The urban areas have nice architecture and real sense of character and are very walkable. Besides the Providence/Pawtucket/Cranston urban core, there are also a numer of small village-type urban areas like EAst Greenwich, Wickford, Bristol, West Warwick, Westerly, etc. The downside is of course the highest unemployment rate in the nation, high taxes, an inept state legislature that panders to the unions and dated infrastructure.

^Don't forget Newport!
I think it's a beautiful coastal state that for such a small area, has a lot of character. Providence is a truly urban, truly diverse, and truly classy city. It's often overshadowed by nearby Boston, but it's New England's second city (all apologies to Hartford). It's a city of neighborhoods, history, and culture rivaled by few cities of comparable size in the nation (if any).
The rest of RI is fantastic. Newport is beautiful. Arguably the most beautiful area in New England. The architecture and history of the mansions are an excellent compliment to the rocky coast and beautiful beaches. the waterfront and downtown areas (and much of Lower Thames St.) provide entertainment and dining and an over all street life that you would have a hard time finding anywhere else in New England-- larger cities included.
That's just the tip of the iceburg, the rural parts of state are equally as cool as the urban ones. Little villages and towns dot the landscape and each one offers something different. Bristol, RI, IMHO may be one of the most underrated towns in New England in terms of all it has to offer.
The location of RI is great. You're so close to Boston, not far from New York City and all of Connecticut's cities and you have access to Amtrak and the Boston Commuter Rail (MBTA).
I don't know much about cost of living, but RI is a wonderful place. There's a lot more in RI than there is in MANY larger states, and that's not an exaggeration.

Everything everyone else has said. The western half of the state is largely rural. The eastern half of the state is mostly suburban, with the exception of the very urban Providence and surrounding areas (Pawtucket, Central Falls, etc.) and the smaller city centers (Woonsocket, Newport). The only truly rural areas in the eastern half of the state are down in Tiverton and Little Compton.
