Silver Lake Ave cross with Union St in Prov
I'm not familiar with the Providence area and an apartment I may view for rent is located on Silver Lake Ave and Union St. Near Cranston and Johnston. Is the area nice/safe? Close to the city/public transportation for someone who doesn't drive? And what are these parks like: King Park and Neutaconkanut Park (on Plainfield Street). Thanks so much for your help and time!

Yes..the Silver Lake area of Providence is close to Cranston and Johnston's borderline. My friend moved to that area about a few months ago and he likes it so far, a lot quieter than south Providence where he formerly lived but he says he misses the corner shops that were abundant in the southside, I know his mom likes Silver Lake.
I don't know about the parks because I never used it before but the area is generally safe, the area closer to Olneyville Square looks a little gritty thats about it. Overall, Sliver Lake is a nice area.

I forgot to mention there are a bunch of bus stops in the area...I think Union St. has plenty. My friend uses the bus to he has no complaints so far.

Not a bad area, but not the best. Considering, it is quiet. Union Ave(Union Street is downtown) can get busy with cross traffic between Plainfield and Pocasset. Plenty of bus service on Plainfield St and Pocasset Ave. The parks are always busy. King Park is a play area and the other is mostly green space.

This is How I Would Rank the Various Neighborhoods in Providence:
1. East Side - the most desirable, also most expensive, but stay away from Camp St. Fox Point might be the most affordable in this neighborhood.
2. Elmhurst - 2nd most desirable area, however you'll need to depend a bit more on the bus. Low Crime area!
3. North End - Charles Street area, OK, has some decent areas between Mineral Spring and Branch.
4. Federal Hill - This is a good choice for one who likes to walk. This is an Italian area, but many of the native Italians have moved to the burbs. This area is around Atwells and Broadway. You might find a good price range, but if you have a car, there might be a parking problem here.
5. Fox Point - part of East Side near India Point
6. Mount Pleasant - has some OK areas, but a bit run-down. Between Chalkstone and Fruithill are fine. Triggs area OK too
7. Silver Lake - Far south west, this is a spotty area, some areas OK. My friends oldest son is very happy living here.
8. Manton - run down - far west side
9. Olneyville - avoid, high crime. depressed
10. Elmwood - avoid, they have tried very hard to renovate this area but it has a long way to go.
11. South Side - Avoid! Even if your good with a switch blade avoid this area. high crime.
I'm sure there are people that would disagree with some of my rankings, but this is my input.

South Side and Elmwood are too broad. The Reservoir Triangle area is still a good area to live. Also, Washington Park has areas to avoid, but still liveable.

Neutakonicut Park just had a massive cleanup a few weekends ago, and it has neat trails going up its steep hills (actually used to be a skiing spot). Not too keen on the surrounding neighborhood though. This area too used to be an old Italian neighborhood, where my family grew up.

The Parts of Silver lake near Providence near Johnston and Cranston are safe. The parts near olneyville are not so nice. There is still a very strong Italian influence around Neutaconkanut park between Plainfield and Pocasset (murray st. down).

From The Providence Journal:
"Elmhurst, a residential neighborhood in northwest Providence, was one of the last areas of the city to be developed, and even today, it is not one of the citys most well-known sections. But residents say Elmhurst is a solid family neighborhood that is much more affordable than the pricey East Side."
It is really a decent area..if you google Elmhurst Neighborhood, Providence, RI you'll find more information.
