Unhappy RI Layoffs

Hi, I have recently been notified that my whole unit is being laid off. Anyone can share any tips on how to find a new job in this environment. Where to go, what to do? Any advice would be appreciated. It's been a while since I had to look for a job (7 years to be exact). So I am very rusty with the whole "job search" thing. Thank you.

What type of job are you looking for? How far are you willing to travel to work?

As the previous poster says, it would help to know what you're looking for.

If you're an introvert (like me), hate calling people, and think you're going to get a job by sitting at your desk and surfing the job boards (monster.com, careerbuilder.com, etc.), let me tell you -- they are basically a complete waste of time. Job boards work for us ONLY in a booming economy -- right now, every employer is getting flooded with thousands of resumes a day. Each resume doesn't even get looked at by a real person -- just scanned by software, playing buzzword bingo.

You might, however, have better results if you're on LinkedIn. I used that successfully to get a job a few weeks ago, just by networking, finding someone who was looking to hire, and sending them a resume. LinkedIn is one way you can get past HR and find actual hiring managers. HR is your enemy -- and the job boards are all about HR/recruiters. You need to get past HR and get to the person who's going to hire you. (Easier said than done, I know from being out of work most of 2008). Good luck!

Urb

I am a banking team manager. I have no friends or relatives in the States, so I really have no one to tell about my layoff. I am an introvert, just like Urb. I see my peers sending their resumes to people they worked for or used to know and here I am spending all my time on the internet trying to do what, as Urb said, is absolutely useless.

My God! What should I do? Where can I meet people? I am in despair. I don't want to collect. I never used any welfare assistance and would prefer not to if I could.

Is there anywhere where I could just go in person so many times a week/month to meet people for networking purposes? Please help
