There is one on Pontiac Ave in Cranston and up Rt2. Much cleaner than price-rite. I like going there but you can't find everything you need. The prices are worth it to me, I just finish my shopping at the Shaw's 1/8 of a mile away.

Aldi really is a weird chain. Being from Germany I know them well, I have seen them rise. For quite some time Aldi was considered taboo for many upper-class Germans, usually it was mainly frequented by Turkish and other immigrant working-class people. That has changed quite a bit, now you can see Lexus and Porsche cars in their parking lots. But they are still as cheap as ever. Their reputation is quite contradictory. Their stuff still is cheap, but at the same time their generic products often rank at the top in many categories. I remember how the detergent giant Henkel complained bitterly when in an independent study the cheap Aldi detergent triumphed over Henkel's pricey Persil, let alone all the other brand names I read somewhere that actually their products are made by big players as well, obviously some of those make more money selling their stuff via Aldi than under their own renowned name. But I don't know if they sell the same stuff in the US that they sell in Germany.
They often have special deals like notebooks which are also top-notch, especially for the price. People stand in line for hours in order to be among the first when the stores open in the morning. And when they are sold out there are sometimes riots by those who have to go home empty-handed
But there is another company now, Lidl, which has used a similar business philosophy and has become Aldi's fiercest competition.

There used to be Walmart stores in Germany, too, but they disappeared as fast as they had appeared. Germans did not like Walmart, it was cheap too, but the quality was poor. Also, Walmart tried that service crap on Germans, like putting employees at the checkout to help people put their stuff in bags. Germans rejected that as intrusiveness. Walmart also tried to import that "We" thingy, morning rituals and that kind of stuff, but German employees did not like being brainwashed and forced to identify with a trash chain just because they needed jobs.

LMAO at all of the misers whining about having to temporarily part with a QUARTER to access a shopping cart! Well, if you fellow shoppers weren't such PIGS who'd let the carts blow around in the parking lot into other vehicles, then they wouldn't be charging you for their carts, would they? (Obviously spoken from the heart by the victim of a HUGE cart ding in my fender!!!)

Aldi's is a narrowly tailored shopping experience, to say the least. They have a very specific business plan, and either you're going to buy into the concept or you arent.

The gist of it is this: Insanely cheap prices, extremely limited selection, 100% generic store brands, zero service (i.e. no bags, cash/debit only, 25 cent deposit for your shopping cart).

I like Aldi alright, because I'm cheap. But the limited selection sometimes makes it a waste of time since you'll probably have to go to a different store for the rest of your food. But if you just need tubs of plain yogurt, cans of beans, and generic cearal ... then damn is Aldi the place for you.
me too. i go there for the cheap, but i hate that you have to bring ur own bags. i pray everytime i go that there are some boxes that people and the store leaves for cheapos like me. and the stores are waaay to small. good and bad, i guess.

Another PA resident who loves Aldi's! We have 4 kids so $1.79 on most boxes of cereal saves my life! The only thing I don't buy there is meat. I have to finish my shopping at another store , but I save big time on the items I do buy there so it is worth the trip.I think you should check it out and you will love them too!

I know someone who shops regularly at the Aldi Supermarket on Pontiac Ave in Cranston. She is on a fixed income and she shops there first. If they don't have it, it's on to Shaw's or StopnShop.

HTH

The Aldi's in my neighborhood is fantastic. I save a lot of money each week. Typically I'll buy canned goods, milk and other dairy products, cereal, staples like sugar, and some fruits and vegetables. They don't carry nearly as many products as a typical grocery store so you have to finish your shopping at a conventional supermarket.

A great review of Aldi grocery stores can be found here:
