Default Advice on where to live

Hi everyone
I just got a job in Providence (very close to Providence College), and would love some advice on where to live. I’m a 34 year old, single, straight male and am looking for an area/neighborhood that has many restaurants, bars, and stores within walking distance. I want to avoid the college crowd, but would prefer an upbeat, maybe artsy area where professionals live and socialize. I’d like to pay under $1000 a month in rent, if possible, and have a large dog.

Any feedback would be great!
Thanks, G

If you do a search on here you'll see that, hands down, the place to be is the East Side of Providence (not to be confused with the city of East Providence). There are many areas on the East Side that are not to close to Brown or RISD but offer the type of lifestyle you mention. More specifically, look into areas around Wayland Square, Wickenden St, Hope St (between Rochambeau and 10th St). You may have trouble staying under $1000 but you never know in this economy.

Providence College is in the Elmhurst secton of Providence. Elmhurst has some nice areas, and will be considerably cheaper than the East Side, it will also help you avoid the college crowd. However, it has only a few restaurants and shops in walking distance though.
