Default Living In Rhode Island working in Mass...taxes

So we did our taxes for federal and for Rhode Island...but my husband works in Mass. How do we get our money back from mass? What forms do we fill out to get the money back he paid in Mass state tax? Please give me a suggestion on what to do.

Thanks,
Nikki

I hope you haven't already filed your RI state tax return -- because you have to know the Mass. numbers to get the RI credit! I work for H&R Block in Pawtucket, and we get a lot of clients who work in MA (like me, for part of last year). The way it works is that RI gives you a tax credit for taxes paid to another state. You have to calculate the amount of tax you paid to MA (not the withholding, but the actual tax liability), and use that to calculate the RI credit. You'll file a nonresident MA return, and send a photocopy of it to the RI Department of Taxation with your RI return, which you have to mail in (instead of e-filing).

If you've already filed your RI return, you'll have to amend it -- which is not a big deal, but it will probably delay your refund.

I don't want this to sound like a commercial announcement, because it isn't -- but send me a PM if you want more info.
