Madison, WI -- I'd go to the Catholic Triangle in Providence. Quiet residential area, many 2 family homes for rent - upscale on some blocks without being in the middle of party-central over by Brown and RISD. Personally, I enjoy going to the Hope St area, but I definitely would not want to live there. RI has as much diversity as the state of WI - South County (Narragansett and SK) have the beaches - I prefer NK for living and you can get some really nice rentals for $1000 and Providence is only 45 minutes away. I used to commute from SK (Wakefield) to Providence - and no, I didn't need an overnight bag and a picnic lunch (joke to natives). Warwick, where my sons and grandkids live is mostly built up and much more of a city feel - too much for me. Then you have the country areas, western RI mostly - Coventry, West Greenwich, Carolina, Burrillville, Pascoag. Keep in mind that RI is only 1 hour wide or long. You can get from Westerly to Barrington in 1 hour.

I think you'll find the East Bay a little high priced but it is really different over there. I'd stick to the West Bay - Providence, Pawtucket, Woonsocket and down to Westerly. If I had to move back, I'd go for South Kingstown again. I lived in Wakefield, Peacedale, Warwick, Wickford in No Kingstown and Providence. If it wasn't for the cold winters, I would still love it there. But I've had it with snow. And NYC is only a 3 hr train ride, 3.5 hours by car. Boston is only an hour from Providence.
