How to entertain grandparents in Prov?
My grandparents are visiting me at the University of Rhode Island this weekend. They are from Savannah GA so my Mammy is very old school, southern bell, and I really want to impress her. On Saturday, I figure we can tour the mansions in Newport then eat there as well. On Sunday I want to bring them to Providence but figure Thayer St. is not the place for grandparents. I don't know the city at all. They love museums though so does anyone have any suggestions of anything at all to do with them? Especially good museums (not too modern) and restaurants? Thanks so much!

RISD has a brand new museum. Go to Federal Hill, then take them for dessert to Pastiche- the best of the best.

I second taking them to RISD museum but not to the modern part. Take them to the beautiful and historic old section. It has a decent impressionists collection and also period furnished rooms. They might also enjoy a tour of the John Brown House on Power & Benefit St.

Svardian, my granddaughter goes to URI. As for memaw and pawpaw, Newport is a good idea if sunny. How about Narragansett Pier, or Westerly ... nice shopping, strolling. If they are able, how about Waterplace Park in Prov. then good food on "The Hill", or one of the nice restaurants at Waterplace Park. Expensive I know, but so is Savannah, and Savannah is gorgeous. (Of course, Paula Deen's was a one timer for me, not impressed.) Rhode Island has the real food.

thank you for your extremely helpful suggestions. On Sunday, I will take them to RISD museum and maybe the John Brown House. I am just unsure as to what restaurant to bring them to based on the neighborhood I will be in and, well, what good restaurants there are. If anyone can recommend any that would be amazing. Thank you!

I don't know if the ferry is running yet, but Block Island is always a nice tour, if its warm enough.

museums are free sunday mornings, no? So you could go to RISD and check out a few of the other free entrance things around there. Also, you can just go to federal hill after that and get lunch/dinner its not a far drive at all.
