Question Property Taxes in Narragansett & North Kingston

Despite being neighbors, North Kingston and Narragansett have very different property tax rates. Anybody know why?

Could be because Narragansett gets a lot of revenue from the tourist trade/services and the beach fees (State and public) which are atrocious if you are not a resident of Narragansett. Newport does the same thing, but we don't even waaant to talk about taxes in Newport now do we.

It's very easy to answer that. Narragansett is 14 square miles and a population of about 16,900. North Kingstown has 43.59 square miles and a population of 27,000. More of everything to maintain.

But the big difference, since schools take up the most of any municipal budget: Narragansett has 1 high school, 1 middle school and 1 elementary.

NK has 1 high school (brand new), 2 middle schools and 6 elementaries. Think salaries and bennies, people. Also more cops and firefighters.

Also taken as a whole, Narragansett's real estate prices are higher than NK's meaning more money available per house at a lesser rate.

That makes a lot of sense. I hadn't considered the tourist dollar, or compared the number of schools.

You've been very helpful, thank you.

There are also a lot of rental properties in Narragansett. These are almost all homes with no children- college in the winter, tourists in the summer. These people pay taxes and stimulate our local economy but they do not tax our school system or most municipal resources (the exception being the police which deal mainly with college kids and tourists)
Also like the others said the beach is a sweet little money maker.
Oh and they tax the bejeesus out of the fancy waterfront homes which takes even more of the burden off of the regular folks. But we don't have trash pickup-boo.
