WALKABLE pedestrian-friendly areas of RI?
Having lived in NYC (very walkable and pedestrian-friendly)...and seen photos of places like ITHACA, NY...also seems very walkable and pedestrian friendly.
It seems the theme is cities that were PRE-AUTOMOBILE. Mainly, walkable and pedestrian friendly. You're able to easily walk out of your house and go rent a movie or eat at a restaurant without having to get into your car to do so.
Where parts of Rhode Island would be like that? Providence being the big city, is that like that? How about Newport which seems to have a bit of an urban population? Anywhere else in RI to consider?

Newport
Newport is a cool area to walk. Lots of historic homes, cool interesting businesses, good restaurants, and ocean views as well
Don't miss the cliff walk if you go :-)
--A great Day trip or weekend trip_
The East Bay Bike path is also pretty cool
East of Providence
TrailLink :: East Bay Bicycle Path
Narragansett would be another interesting area to walk along the beach

This topic has been much discussed on this forum before but a short list of places including parts of the city itself, and picturesque small towns that you might like:
1. East Side of Providence; Wayland Square (shops, restaurants) College Hill (Brown U, can walk there and also to downtown), Hope Village (small shopping strip- has ballet theatre, bank, CVS, and the Wickenden St. area (restaurants) which is part of Fox Point (restaurants, shops, hardware store).
1. a. Federal Hill section of Providence. (Trendy previously Italian section, gourmet restaurants, nightlife)
2. Bristol & Warren (small seaside towns with main street shopping)
3. Wickford (quaint walkable village on harbor)
4. East Greenwich ( walkable small town)
5. Pawtuxet Village, Warwick. (quaint village, parks, shops)
6. Newport (small city- all amenities)
7. Westerly (small city, nice park, shops, library)
8. Tiverton (seaside city , harbor, street of shops
I'm sure others will have more ideas. P.S. Most people find desirable areas of RI to be expensive, but of course it depends on what you're comparing it to.

I can't help noting the irony in the fact that Kennedy Plaza is one of the most pedestrian-hostile spots in town!

Not sure what your point is- it's the downtown bus hub- people standing around to take the public bus- cars are routed through there as well - otherwise there would be traffic jams....

My point is that it's inconvenient for the bus rider -- you have to dodge cars every which way, to get to the bus station. And it's remarkably badly located -- sort of in the middle of everything, but not close to any particular thing, as if it had been designed by someone who never took a bus in his life.
