commutes Jamestown-Kingston
Hi all, thanks for all the greatly informative posts!
I'm incoming URI faculty and moving to Rhode Island with my family this summer. We are originally from Puerto Rico. We are looking all over the place, someplace that's not too far from Kingston and that is nice to live (we are beach fanatics). We have been hearing about Jamestown as a possibility, so I wanted to ask: How is Jamestown to live? How's the commute from Jamestown to Kingston?
thanks in advance!
Carlos

Jamestown
While Jamestown isn't exactly a beach community, it is along with Little Compton, probably considered to be the nicest town in Rhode Island. And the commute to Kingston is around 20 minutes. There are very few parts of Jamestown that are not absolutely beautiful. Good choice.

Jamestown is a lovely area. It is also a very small community and quite expensive to live in. Town center is a couple of streets- of course it's right next to Newport.
There are a few lower priced homes but most will be upwards of 500k- some well upwards. There may be a few year round rentals- some will be academic year only since it is a tourist based economy and they will rent to vacationers in the summer. Don't know if it matters to you, but it is less than 1% Hispanic.

The commute to Kingston is 20 minutes from Jamestown. Beaches are not big like on the South Coast of RI, but there are tons of coves and cliffs and places to explore and hike. It is a quiet, relaxed island community with an influx of old money/boating people in the summer, not overly conservative, environmental/family friendly. Some of the slightly more reasonably priced places for rent are in the Jamestown Shores part of the island which has good off island access. I will say though the waters are often a bit colder here than the south coast beaches, if you like to swim.

Hi all, thanks for the great information, I look forward to make many friends in Rhode Island!
How's the bus service between Jamestown/Newport and the URI Kingston campus? I saw info in the RIPTA website about a bus that runs more or less hourly during the day on weekdays: Is that information up-to-date? Is the bus line reliable?
thanks in advance!

The bus is reliable, as in -on time, except during snowstorms.
