Upsidedownpig - this might sound like an unusual suggestion, but consider asking the people that actually live there. If it's not convenient to visit the property in advance, and casually approach the tenants as they enter or leave the building, you can do it remotely. I entered the Slater Cotton Mill building address in a white pages address reverse lookup, and found this extensive list of tenant names, apartment numbers and phone numbers.

I recommend you call a few on a Saturday afternoon, when they will be less busy than a workday. Introduce yourself, explain you're thinking of signing a lease, and ask if they would be willing to share their experience. Ideally, you'd pick people that live on the same floor as the one that has the vacancy you're interested in. What's the worst that can happen? They'll refuse to talk to you. Best case, you've met a few of your neighbors in advance of moving in, if what they have to say is consistently positive and you decide to go ahead.
