Is that really the only reason you posted? Uh, ok, "I look forward to moving up there." Does that make you feel better?

Um....wouldn't it be more like- 'over there'? Either way......the one thing I don't like about our area is there aren't enough crunchy people- the only hipsters I see are on the East Side. Twenty years ago it was different- and that is one thing I miss about the West. Regardless there isn't a lot of space here. Hate to say it but I think RI will become more urbanized than it already is, eventually.

Thanks for the heads up. I kinda knew going in to it that it would be a culture shock. Im ok though, with people not wanting to open up and be friendly. Frankly, I dont want people in my business also. Im more of a "keep to myself" sort of person anyway. But, there is a line between that and just being plain rude. That, I dont like. If Im not being nasty or rude to you, then I dont expect it in return. Generally, I'm pretty nice to everyone and I know not everyone "up there" will be the same and I dont mind at all, its just the overly aggressive rudeness that I cant stand. I guess it will be different but Im willing to put up with it for the quality of life. Thanks for your input/advice!

Sorry if you found my comment rude- I didn't mean it to be rude- I was actually wondering if you realized what the geography of your move entailed. You would be going from the lower part of the west coast to the upper part of the east coast. Just can't fathom why you would say down!!

On the other hand, I find people here to be way nicer than in Florida.
So who knows what copper will think.

I see there is an impressive number of kind, friendly, talkative, conscientious, and down-to-earth people in RI.
I understand the basic criticism that there is a sort of gruff reserve to New Englanders. I think this shows itself in two main groupings.
There are the 'salt of the earth' types who put in an honest day of genuine hard work, put up with nasty weather and bearish winds and biting salt spray, and aren't exactly affluent. These include fishermen (and fisherwomen), farmers, carpenters, cooks, mechanics, loggers/treeworkers, and many "independent contractor" artisans and workers of all sorts.
Then there are the snooty elite "I am so damn wealthy and always have been" types. Saw a bunch of these yesterday, having their June parties and wedding receptions and "let's go drive around the coast in the Audi" expeditions.
However, with both of these groups, the reserve exterior is really just a superficial "put on." These folks are friendly, too. Honestly, I don't believe there's much truth to the "unfriendly" New Englander stereotype. This theory just doesn't hold much water, not even freezing, turbulent sea water!!
BTW, R'nrboy, here is a list of the states and territories of the USA that are as cold or colder than RI:
Alaska
Idaho
Montana
North Dakota
Minnesota
Wisconsin
Michigan
Connecticut
Massachusetts
New Hampshire
Maine
Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan barely make the list, only on account of their frigid winters.
R'nrboy, that's NOT a long list....

And where was this list produced from?
I can think of plenty of states you missed. (If we're talking about Winter here, which I was. A lot of people don't mind reasonable summers without endless heatwaves.)
For one thing you missed Vermont which should have been fairly obvious. Nebraska comes to mind as well. And who would have listed North Dakota without South Dakota? You obviously. Colorado also comes to mind. I recall that lovely April snow storm they had. (It hasn't snowed in April in Rhode Island in the 6 years I've been here. Not even late March.)
Just go to weatherchannel.com my friend. Look at Winter temperatures, sunlight, and snowfall.
I tell ya, some people just can't jive with facts.
