The last time I was there....1977.

It was "cool" back then, how 'bout now?

I did the "Google Earth" thing and noticed that the amusement park is gone.

A casino now?

Bummer.

We spent two weeks every summer in a little cottage on the breachway; what a blast!

Fishin', catchin' crabs, starfish, etc. Clams on the BBQ, lobsterfest, and that soft serve ice cream.

We'd fish all day on the rocks using squid we bought at the local store. Caught a lot of weird stuff, but as a kid managed to bring home some flounder occassionally.

Even saw a guy land a sand shark once.

All of us kids are in our 40's now, and I'd like to organize a reunion of sorts. Preferably at the same cottage (yup, it's still there).

Anyone been there recently?

What's your take on the area?

I think you'll find that Weekapaug has changed very little since 1977 and will be pretty much as you remember it. Only thing is it may have gotten more expensive. Weekapaug Inn, for example, which used to be sort of suspended in time with 19th century charm, has been renovated and gone upscale, i.e. very expensive.

Yeah, I noticed the weekly rates for cottages there....yikes!

Comparable to Key West....

I s'pose we can parlay the cost and spread it around...the kids will have a blast there if they have half the fun we did.

I guess we'll just have to rent a bunch of cots...

...and put up with the outdoor shower complaints...

A short walk to the beach, but it beats the crowds in Misquamicut.

Me...I'll split my time between the beach and Watch Hill.

My family has a beach house in Weekapaug so I spent all my summers there. Its a wealthy summer community but not showy like it is in Watch Hill. Very little has changed, its still a very old styled new england summer community. Maybe a few more houses (the CEO of ESPN built a house next door to ours) but for the most part still retains its charm. There is a private club and private beach (need special buttons)

fact - Weekapaug Groove by the band Phish was named after the village.

found a neat map of the area

The little amusement park is still there on the beach in Misquamicut. There is no casino in Weekapaug nor any town in the coastal area. Parking is expensive everywhere. At beautiful Watch Hill just west of Misquamicut, as you pull into the parking lot at the little town harbor, the attendant will ask what you are there for. Tell him you wish to do some shopping and you can park all day for free. If you say you want to walk on Napatree Point or the beach, there is a stiff parking fee.

Weekapaug has changed little, but rentals are sky high near the water. A couple thousand dollars a week in August is cheap for a small house. If you are rich .. well, I know of one mansion in Watch Hill where you could be very comfortable with a family of twenty or so, for $80,000 for August!

OK.

Help me out here.

I had to "Google Earth" to refresh my memory.

There's a public beach in Weekapaug, right next to the rocks at the start of the breachway. If I remember correctly, it's an RV campground. Walking down the beach (West), there's a private club (Sea Side Beach Club), then another 'lil beach for cottage rentals. From there on a clear day, you could see the Ferris wheel.

Now, I "Googled" this and headed west. I placed my arrow where the amusement park is and it sez:

"Atlantic Beach Resort & Casino". No Ferris wheel?

I spotted the buildings where the arcade was and also the roller rink.

This is the place where we had tons 'o' fun as kids, and I was thinkin' it would be neat to have the whole clan there.

Noticed the water park too.....that's "new".

I remember our excursions to Watch Hill very well. Wonderin' if that ancient merry-go-round is still there? All of the little shops to take your money, LOL. Also, the adults in the car oohin' & ahhin' at the fantastic homes in the area.

BTW.

A 'lil late, but we were in Weekapaug during the first lunar landing in 1969. It rained, so we watched a lot of it on the TV.

Yeah, the little ancient merry-go-round is still there and still free. Its one of the the oldest in the country. The small Watch Hill strip still has the little shops. The parking lot right there near the indian statue overlooking the cove is the place where you ,ahem, park to shop till you drop.

As to Misquamicut Beach, the Casino is just the name they have on the game arcade. Darn, I drove thru there just last week, and darned if I noticed if the ferris wheel is there or not. The little stony beach is my favorite because its out of the way and kind of isolated. Restaurants: Aunt Carries, Georges and Champlins (2nd floor) all in Galilee, are real busy and good. Try Crazyburgers on Boone Street in Narragansett ,but ask to eat on the Terrace-- the kids will love it! The frry from there to Block Island is high speed now and only takes a half hour for the crossing.
